“Mary’ll cut your tongue out.”

“Only if you tell on me.”

I got up and went to check on dinner, leaving them wrestling in the water. After a while, they came in with towels wrapped around their waists, dripping water on everything. John had mud on his legs from falling, so I whipped off his towel and sent him back to the crick again.

A moment later, I heard him call and stepped outside to see riders approaching. I shoved John in the direction of the house. He should not be standing naked in front of these men—not these American men. They’d seen him, of course, but there was nothing I could do about that. 19
