Arlo retched a couple of times, and the relief as Arlo patted his hand was enough to make him want to weep, except they didn’t have time for shit like that now.

“Are you with me, babe?”

Arlo groaned. “Gil?” The voice was barely audible.

Nash didn’t know how to respond.

“Shh.” Arlo caressed his arm.

“I didn’t say anything.”

“No, I know. It’s in my…” He pointed at his head. “You’re scared.”

Nash wanted to deny it, but how could he?

“The knife. I didn’t heal, and this knife looked the same.”

“I can’t go there.”

Nash wanted to object, wanted to force Arlo to heal Gilbert. He’d healed him, he could heal Gilbert. “He’s dying.”

Arlo nodded, and it chilled Nash to the bone. Sixty years. Gilbert had been his best friend for sixty years. His one constant. The only one he could be himself with. The only one who understood what the change of time did to a person when he stayed unchanged. “He can’t die.” Nash’s voice broke, a sob climbing his throat.
