“Oh, sorry. It’s the woman in charge of the people who took you. She’s running some sort of traveling freak show. All her employees are terrified of her. We’re pretty damn sure she’s the one with the talisman that mutates things.”

Dakota nodded once more and twisted his damaged form enough to look her in the eye. “I’m pretty sure I met her.”

“What?” came from Yuuki, who halted her path toward their vehicle.

“Right before everyone split, and they put that thing in with me, she showed up to have a talk.” He coughed and hung his head a little. “She—she called me the ‘Scourge of New Orleans.’” Another cough.

Ken’s heart sank. Of all the things that could break her dad’s spirit, being reminded that he was inescapably connected to the tsunami—such a name would be high on the list. Right next to Gage’s murder. She tried not to think about it as they started walking again.
