Bab 20: Chapter 20

There were five farms at a reasonably close distance. Almost all of them had long driveways. She knew it would take up valuable time to go down each one, but what choice did she have? With her heart pounding and her lungs beginning to ache, she ran up to the properties and slammed her fist against the front doors.

Of the first set, only one person was there to answer. A middle-aged white woman holding two babies. With labored breaths, Ken told her to seek shelter. She thanked her and quickly disappeared into the house.

Other houses and farms could be found farther down the street after a long stretch of nothingness. Corn husks ripped away from their stalks and flew past her head. She tried to keep low to the street. After a while, the debris became so intense that she had to shield her eyes with both hands. The sky was black, even though it had to be around lunchtime. And though she continued farther and farther from Union City, it felt like the winds were only getting faster.
