After that, John’s optimism about our future had dwindled more every day. He’d finally understood I had a marooned heart and preferred it that way. For the first time since John and I had split, I wanted to call him. He’d left it up to me to make contact.

I read Eileen’s last e-mail again. I’d twist the blade in the wound.

She’d sent this one only three weeks ago.

I hope this e-mail finds its way to you. I read your books, well, I’m finishing the last one right now, but I started a new job so I haven’t had a lot of time. You’re a good writer. I usually don’t like those kinds of books, but yours are different, I guess.

Anyway, congratulations on your success. It must be tough being a writer. I don’t know, seems like a tough job, but I guess if you like doing it, then it’s not so bad.
