I noticed I hadn’t heard a sound out of Ruby, so I lowered my menu to see why and noticed her staring at me, her mouth agape.
“What?”
“You’re seeing someone? Who? Why haven’t you told me? What the fuck, Landers.”
“Oh.” I shrugged. “It’s recent, I guess. Um, remember the guy from the club on my birthday?”
Ruby nodded enthusiastically. “Your boss.”
“Yes. Well, anyway, we went to dinner one night and last night, he came over.”
“Over?”
“To my apartment after my class.” I raised the menu to hide my red face.
“You’re blushing!”
“Am not.”
“Did you…did he?” Her voice came out sort of high pitched and squeaky.
“We, um, well, we did some stuff.”
She narrowed her eyes. “What stuff?”
The waitress appeared at our table, saving me, at least for a moment, and I ordered a Diet Coke, and a salad that had chicken and strawberries on it and Ruby ordered a chicken burger.
She kicked me under the table as soon as the waitress left.
