“Oh, Warrick. Are you all right? What wasthat?”

I buried my head against her. Hot tears ran down my cheeks and spilled onto her breast.

And then she screamed, “Look at its eyes! It’s the gypsy!”

I blinked and raised my head. I had no idea how she recognised the wolf as he lay across the rug before the window.

I left Eira weeping on the bed as I dragged myself to him. “Nicolae.” I whimpered. His head was shattered and covered with blood, and for a moment I thought I might vomit.

I got myself under control and pulled him onto my lap. He was fast assuming his human form.

How could I go on? Oh God, how could I go on? I bowed my head, and my tears fell onto the shattered skull of my golden-eyed gypsy lover. 33: Warrick

I carried Nicolae’s body down to my car, then returned to Eira’s little kitchen and put the kettle on. With that done, I found a bucket and a mop, filled the bucket with water from the kitchen sink, and climbed the stairs to her bedroom.
