I could hear the conversation, although it grew slightly fainter as I proceeded further into the wine cellar.

“How could one man hope to drink all this wine in one lifetime?”

“That is not my father’s intention, Mr Tanner. Some of those are investments, pure and simple. There is a ‘47 Port in there that I believe is worth several thousand pounds. Other bottles he had laid down for special occasions, such as my brother’s marriage, if it should ever come about.”

“You have doubts of that?” Dorincourt was curious.

“Well, my dear, Father cannot find anyone he thinks is worthy of Garrick.”

“And it sure as hell won’t be one of the hereditary princesses.” There was wry amusement in Remy’s tone as he joined me. “They make a sweet couple,” he murmured. “In spite of my doubts about true love, I do believe those two may have found it.”

That distracted me. “You don’t believe in love?”

“Well, it’s never found me. How are things progressing, pe-please?”
