Fortunately, he was unaware. “I expect this should be a piece of cake in comparison.” He grinned at me over his shoulder.

“Splendid.” I stood next to him, pointing out a number of rooms in the cellar, inhaling the scent of the soap he used. I would have used the position to make him more aware of my presence, but I forced myself to remember I was his director. He worked under me, and in spite of the fact he persisted in chasing redheads—at least one of them men—I was one redhead who wouldn’t be among them.

“Has any work been done to it since it was built?”

I spread out a set of blueprints. “When Haynsworth came into the title shortly before the War, he had these plans drawn up. However, work couldn’t begin until 1946.”

“Hmm.”

“I have the feeling something might have been done after that work was completed. I need you to examine the cellar to ascertain that.”
