“My pretty…” Tanner began to choke. At first I assumed it was in embarrassment, and I was about to apologise, but then I realised it was in amusement. “In that case he’ll learn how very wrong he is. This pretty phiz of mine has caused many and many to underestimate me, sir.”

“Very well. Just remember I don’t like funerals.”

“I’ll remember, sir.” His voice was almost caressing, and I wondered idly if it sounded that way when he was making love.

I gave myself a brisk shake. Where wasmy mind wandering?

“Very good, then. Now, as I was saying…”

I watched as Tanner left the restaurant.

I knew he could take care of himself. He’d had years to learn, even before he’d joined the Royal Marines.

As for myself…I frowned down at my lap. You are not helping things, sir!

This had not been one of my better ideas. I’d been certain enough time had passed, but those Jeremy eyes had observed me intently as I’d told him what the future most likely held for him for the next five years.
