Not only did Tanner not bat for the same team as I, but it was the only honourable course open to me; I would not put a man who worked for me in that position.
As I saw it, the only manner in which I would ever have Tanner under me was if he was in my squad, for any other choice would see him working for the likes of Stewart, or possibly Greenley.
Meanwhile, there were things that needed doing. I pulled out a file on one of the operations that would begin running as soon as Tanner returned from his holiday.
Now I asked the Wolf, “He’ll be going undercover?”
“He’ll be going deepundercover. I’m anticipating this to run a good five years at the least, quite possibly more. Tanner will have a chance to make use of his Italian.” The Wolf paused at the door. “Keep me abreast of things.”
“Aren’t you a bit old to be turning into a mother hen at this late date?”
“Yes. Of course. So sorry.” Those deep grooves appeared at the corner of his mouth, and then he was through the door and gone.
