Gautier didn’t permit herself to frown, but that didn’t stop Finchley. “How did you know that?”

For some reason, that caught the young man’s attention, and his shoulders tightened.

“All of them. I have better control that way. I choose only the most physically fit and mentally acute men to work for me. Of course, sometimes the pairing is simply unsuccessful. In that case, the experiment is halted and employment terminated.” She shrugged. “Nothing goes to waste. We learn from each attempt. Now, must I ask you again to return Elwyn to me?
