Bab 97: Chapter 97

“Your ma told you that?”

He nodded.

“And she trusted him?”

“Yes, but things at that place were getting dangerous—she was afraid they might hurt me—and she had to get me out of there. She couldn’t say goodbye to him, she just took me away. I don’t remember that first year too well—” He rubbed his thigh, almost as if he didn’t realize what he was doing.

“You remember those early years?”

“Yes.” He seemed surprised I should ask. I remembered a couple of things from when I was three and four, but other than time spent with my old lady’s men or in the hospital, I’d buried most other memories. “We traveled around a lot, and I couldn’t take anything but memories with me, so I made a point of remembering. A few years ago, Uncle Gunther figured out where we were living, and he…he quit that other place and came to us. That made Ma really nervous. If Uncle Gunther could find us, Deuce and his men could find us too. Uncle Gunther said no, but Ma still worried.”
