“Did something happen?”
“No. It was like any other normal weekend. We went out to dinner Friday night, came back to the house, and went to bed and the next morning over coffee, she told me she didn’t think our relationship was working.”
“What did you say?”
“I told her I didn’t think it was working either.”
“Why did you say that?”
“Because it’s true.” He sighed. “Jill is a lovely woman and I enjoyed being with her, but I knew I would never be the man she wanted me to be.”
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For coming between you two.”
“You didn’t. When Jill told me she wanted to break things off, honestly, it was a relief.”
“Is that how you felt when we broke up, too?”
“No. That disappointed me, but I guess I knew it was coming.”
