By the time everyone returned to Everest Base Camp, noon had arrived, and the original team of three had expanded to eleven.
That's right, eleven people.
After Bi Fang rescued Saito, at an altitude of 5,400 meters, the detector reacted again. Digging was like unearthing gourds on a vine, seven from a single stem—apart from one who was dead on the spot, the other six were injured, some severely, some less so, but all were able to walk.
Since the altitude was not far from Everest Base Camp and they were out of the Khumbu Glacier area, Bi Fang let the six of them support each other and walk together.
As for why four plus six equaled eleven, the reason was Bi Fang had found another old acquaintance, one of the two Sherpa guides who had untied their ropes and fled for their lives.
The other, unfortunately, Bi Fang did not find, and his fate remains unknown...
