Alex glanced at the ring coiling his finger, wondering if what happened more than two decades ago could have ended differently. He was only sixteen when he found out he carried another life in him. And though he knew his future would be doomed if he chose to keep the baby, Alex still did.

The small doctor heaved a deep sigh after he waved at the car that brought Michael and Ryley's new guard away from his front yard. 

He rummaged through his coat's pocket for the key but then accidentally dropped it. Alex bent down and picked it up from the floor, but then the sound of footsteps climbing his doorstep halted his movement.

A looming shadow towered over his petite figure in no time, and when he slowly turned his head to look at who it was, Alex dropped the key in his hand.
