As we get ready to go out, showered and dressed, I don’t get to catch James by himself, and he still won’t meet my eye.

I’m itching to know what happened. Charlotte is humming. There’s a spring in her step and a light in her eyes that wasn’t there before….

What the fuck has he said to her…?

At ‘Luigi’s’ the three of us sit over pasta, salad and red wine. The meal is, as ever, excellent. Charlotte is animated and chatty, James calm.

“Um…. ‘S’cuse me…” she says.

As she vanishes to the bathroom, I wait until she is out of earshot, then turn to James.

“Alright, shoot,” I demand, then drop my voice as I realise heads are turning my way. “What happened? What have you said to her? You told her? How you feel about her?”

“Um…. Not exactly….”

“Then, what exactly?”

“I kissed her.”

I stall, spluttering for words. “You kissed her?”

“Yes, I kissed her.”

“But you must have kissed her a thousand times….”
