Perched quietly on a tree branch, and out of sight from below, Bricius studied his new possession with discerning eyes. The human woman with golden curls and brown eyes stood, seemingly lifeless. Though she was chipped around the edges, to him, she was fascinating. Perfect, even. He could see something deep inside her soul, a light different than he’d seen in the other humans he’d watched wander into his realm over the centuries. Something rustled, and the air shifted. Bricius nimbly jumped down the tree to land in a crouched bow. “Sire.”

Loïc stood over him. Though his head was lowered, Bricius could feel the king’s gaze scrutinizing him. “I’ve called for you more than once. Why have you kept me waiting?”
