The reason why he sounded bitter and frustrated was none other than the way the sect's supreme elder treated him. Although the old woman deigned to receive him, that was not because she had any kind of respect or esteem for him, but instead, because she found him as a useful and disposable tool that she could use to deal with some of the problems she had at hand. 

Such was the mentality of an expert that according to Desmond's estimations, she was at the maximum level three star stage, or even higher. It's not that Desmond didn't understand her either, after all, this woman was not only much more powerful than him, but her status was also different and she had a whole sect to worry about. Their points of view were fundamentally different, not that it did much for Desmond to feel better.
