Bab 25: Great Magic!
Thus passes a peaceful night. At least it is inside here. If anything happened outside, I am oblivious to it.
[Are you there…Lil Ygg was it?]
No answer. This is weird. Maybe he is trying to hide until I forgive him for messing with me yesterday. Still, a weird AI that can only work on a magical house is useless without any upgrade materials.
Time for today's planning!
Objective 1: Survive. This one should be a given.
Objective 2: Learn some type of magic to survive better!
I go outside and…. what are these guys doing here?! The bear and the tiger are both waiting at the entrance quietly. Well, that is until I come out.
"Morning teacher x2!"
What is it so early in the morning?
[Hey, guys!]
"Teacher you said you don't know any magic, right?! We can try and teach you! Then you can give us pointers!"
Why would I be the one giving pointers if I'm the one being taught? This doesn't make much sense. Oh well, I guess it is the norm for these guys.
[Ready whenever you guys are!]
The bear comes forward.
"Let us start with warding techniques. I will show you how to hide all traces of your lair and stop any sound from going through."
With his claws, he starts drawing runes on the ground. He is surprisingly extremely proficient at it! Honestly, I feel like he could give a pro calligrapher a run for his money. This is insane considering his huge paws!
I wish I had that ability. Then again this must be the result of countless hours of training. For all I know, he has been drawing over and over for years. That is one thing that should never be underestimated.
You know how sometimes people will ask some artists for a commissioned work? They will use the argument of it barely taking any time to complete to try and bargain the price downward.
What they do fail to take note of is the amount of effort that went into reaching such a proficiency level in the first place.
Cheap bastards pretty much.
Let me give another example. If it takes a policeman only a second to save your life would you belittle it just because it was over quickly? Probably not.
Anyway, this bear is a pro for sure. He's already done everything he had to do apparently. He gives a satisfied nod and moves backward.
"After all this is done, this bear just needs to activate it and …"
It glows softly, then a transparent dome flickers into existence before disappearing. I check it. My hand can pass through the now invisible layer. Or is it perhaps deactivated now? The bear slams his paw inside and it …doesn't make any noise at all.
"This is a barrier to block the noise."
I see. I try snapping my fingers a few times inside, nothing. Then outside of it, I can hear it clearly now. This is so cool!
"Do you want to try teacher?"
[Of course! What do I need to draw exactly?]
"Just copy everything I did teacher!"
I take my time and draw every single rune to the best of my abilities. I use a nearby stick I find. I swear reproducing something that you are unfamiliar with is actually hard.
We are so used to writing that it feels natural but introduce new characters and bam it's back to learning again. A mix of trying to memorize the symbols and missing the muscle memory to draw it accurately.
It takes me a while, but I do succeed! The tiger and the bear are looking at my work with vivid attention.
"Teacher, what are all these symbols? Is it an upgraded version of the original spell? This is amazing!"
What upgraded version?! This is exactly what he drew. Except …not as professionally written. Is it that bad?!
[T-That I just tried my best.]
The bear goes inside excitingly only to be joined by the tiger half a beat later. Both these huge creatures are squeezing themselves inside a small boundary. This is ridiculous.
"Teacher, can you hear me?"
[Yes, I can hear you very well.]
"Ah! Is it not activated yet? Go ahead teacher and drive some mana into it so we can see its effects!"
Here goes nothing. I seriously wish this is going to work. Let me picture the mute button on a remote being pressed. The target being my 2 companions.
I can feel mana leaving my body and going inside the thing I drew. I can feel the air becoming heavy for a second. Then everything returns to normal. I don't see any sort of transparent boundary, however.
Is it possible that the spell was a failure? Wouldn't be surprising considering how much I screwed step one. Wait, I can see both the bear and the tiger open and close their mouths. Over and over again too.
Are they talking? Nice, this is working! I managed to use magic for the first time by myself and voluntarily! This will be a turning point in my life! At least, I think?
They finally get tired of playing twister inside and come out.
[How was it? This is my first time using this magic, to be honest. Good thing it went well.]
I can't wait to be praised by my so-called disciples. Sometimes I wonder if I deserve so much support haha. Just gotta wait a bit more and…
None of them has anything to say about this new feat of mine? Alright, it's true that is pretty basic for them. The thing is this is kind of a big deal for someone that comes from a modern world where that stuff is only in fiction.
Let's see…oh god! Both the bear and the tiger are looking at me with their mouths open. It seems like they are both trying their best to talk. No sound coming out whatsoever.
There is something even worse. No matter how they are moving about they are not making any noise at all. It is as if they are now ghosts!
This magic is great! Maybe just a bit too effective….
What am I supposed to do now?!
