As the saying goes there are problems only wine can solve and so was Fen Hao's grievances. In this case, it was over a bottle of beer but whatever because they are both liquor. The effect was similar especially when accompanied by Old Lu's grilled skewers.
The two boys devoured a pyramid of juicy skewers on the roadside stall without a care in the world. They weren't especially considerate of their appearances while eating their fill but they somewhat managed to attract several girls boosting Old Lu's business.
The old man was so happy seeing his usually empty tables on a weeknight filled with customers that he had to send five more skewers to his biggest attraction as a token of appreciation in person.
"You boys should come over more often. I will give you ten per cent off each time," said Old Lu placing the metal plate on the table.
Jin Lin wiped his fingers before pulling the plate closer. "Ah uncle, that won't be necessary. I come here because your skewers are the best in the city," said Jin Lin before Fen Hao interrupted him.
"That's because you haven't tried..... Ouch, ah... dage," complained Fen Hao after being kicked under the table by Jin Lin. He knew what restaurant Fen Hao was about to mention. Yes, the skewers there tasted like the lamb was raised in a spa with exclusive massages, facials and a luxurious diet all the while listening to classical music before slaughter like wagyu cows.
Jin Lin could swear that their lamb wore deodorant or something because it had none of the unique musk scent associated with lamb. The pampering treatment that the animals went through before slaughter was truly reflected in the price of the skewers but Jin Lin wouldn't tell Old Lu that, lest it screws with his self-esteem. This is why Jin Lin kicked Fen Hao under the table.
Old Lu noticed something was amiss but he didn't dwell too much on it patting Jin Lin's back. "You are a good boy, son. Remember what I said last time..... my niece is available if you are looking for a wife," he said with a throaty chuckle before walking away.
Fen Hao took a sip of his beer and asked, "Is she hot?" in a whisper. He wouldn't dare say it out loud lest he falls victim to Old Lu's infamous broom. He saw that old man use it on one of his customers once and boy was it embarrassing.
Jin Lin cocked his eyebrow and replied, "Mm but I am not interested..... oh and she's off-limits to you too." He felt like he had to say that otherwise if Fen Hao broke that girl's heart then he won't be able to come to his favourite skewer place after being barred for life. He bit off a piece of his mouthwatering lamb skewer feeling a gaze boring through his skin.
It was a group of girls staring at them while letting out low shrieks. Jin Lin feigned blindness and picked up his beer to take a sip when he heard his cellphone vibrating in his pocket.
It was a notification from the game but he didn't take it seriously placing it back into his pocket to continue his meal. Whatever it is it had to wait till morning so the two hung out till they ate their fill.
"How about we play more games wasted like last time? I bet that would be a whole lot of fun," suggested Fen Hao as they walked back to Jin Lin's apartment.
Jin Lin involuntarily stiffened recalling how he almost got his Gods of Equino account blocked when he couldn't remember his passwords after the fourth bottle. He did find it fun playing drunk Pacman which he was surprisingly good at so he agreed but regretted it the very next morning.
"Oh, Shit!... What? Fuck no!... AAAAHHHHH!!!!" were the sounds of Fen Hao coming from the couch where he slept last night instantly waking up Jin Lin who had a massive hangover.
He knew he shouldn't have drunk this much last night but he was tricked by Fen Hao to play sudoku and drink a shot each time he lost and that was a lot. He wasn't a numbers guy and Fen Hao exploited that.
"Ouch!" yelled Fen Hao as a soft yet hard pillow landed on his head making him yelp out involuntarily.
"Do you have a death wish?..... Give me ten more minutes and I will fulfil your wish," said Jin Lin in a threatening tone before covering his entire head with his quilt.
Fen Hao gulped in fright but no matter how terrified he was of this version of Jin Lin he had to show him something otherwise he might literally die of impatience.
He stood at a safe distance while gently poking the bulge under the quilt calling out in a soft tone, "Dage.....Lin-ge.... you have, you have to see this. I promise it's worth your time." Fen Hao waited for a while but nothing happened. He was about to call out again when a hand came out of the quilt and grabbed the cellphone before vanishing once more.
Two seconds later Jin Lin jolted sitting up straight with his expression speaking volumes. "No way..... you must be kidding me, right?" said Jin Lin staring fixedly at the screen.
It was a golden ticket for Fen Hao to participate in Equino's gaming capsule version of the Gods of Equino at their headquarters. Of course, there would be examinations to test if they were suitable for this trial but that was only a formality.
This was his chance to see his older brother but... this was Fen Hao's golden ticket. That's when he recalled the notification from last night. He flung the quilt away and began to turn the room upside down.
"Jin-ge what are you looking for?" asked Fen Hao not sure how to react at this moment. He was thrilled with the invitation but he would gladly give Jin Lin his spot so he can go look for Jin Chen.
"Phone.... where did..... Got it," he said as he scanned his fingerprint with his trembling hands. This was it. The moment he had been waiting for five years. He could finally be reunited with his brother even if it was in a game.
As expected Jin Lin had received his invitation last night but he had assumed it was a system notification on some trivial matter. No one could understand how he was feeling in this moment as his eyes reddened.
"I got it too..... I freaking got one too," he smiled with a face brimming with emotion.
