Linda's POV
After having my own runway show in front of Luke with the clothes he'd given to me, as well as a few others - none of which caught our interest by the way - we call for backup.
Talking about random things, ranging from jokes, teasing people around us, best food and movies ever to other things I probably won't remember, we barely take note of Leah arriving with her arms filled with bags containing things needed for the party.
" you bunch of fishes! " Leah says loudly taking us by surprise.
" oh you're here " I tell her giving her the wide Cheshire cat grin that I know she hates so much.
" ewe! " she says walking off to begin her job as commander in charge of ruining my life.
I try on a dozen clothes and come close to killing Leah more than half of that time.
I finally grab some random black top and ice blue jeans hanging on the rack and ignore Leah's command for me to ' get back here. '
I face the mirror in the changing room and what I see takes my breath away causing to make a decision that if Leah likes it or not, I'm picking this.
The stripy sleeves of the black top leaves several gaps on the elbow which shows my tanned skin off beautifully. The chest area is like a curtain covering jewels with the net sewed in place to tease.
I head out waiting to be beaten to a pulp by Leah.
She turns around fuming with anger. " you are so...! " But doesn't complete her sentence instead her jaw drops down.
" beautiful " I hear Luke say and turn to face him. For some reason his eyes seem darker and I can't seem to take my eyes off them.
Leah clearing her throat pulls back our attention, making me blush.
" uhm... I think I'll just ehm...ehm... "
" go change out of those so we can go. "
" ri...right " I say still standing but looking down.
" so go " Leah says pushing me back into the changing room.
We quickly pay for the clothes and head back home, me and Luke not looking each other in the eye the whole time.
Everyone's finally going home after a very long day, how I wish Esperanza could make it, I mean we've kind of been planning this our whole life. It just doesn't seem right without her here.
" you need to be strong for her, celebrate for her. " Luke says to me quietly reminding me of the now empty house minus the two of us that is.
" right " I reply not wanting to show much emotion, which only makes me wonder why I'm so hell bent on hiding my emotions from him now when I didn't do that earlier.
" I guess it's only eight left. "
" I think we pretty much covered a great deal of the party plans. "
" not that I am actually talking of your little list. "
" oh "
" I already marked off the shopping just the party left to host. " Luke says showing me the list.
List of things I've never done
1. Never dated. √
2. Never gone against school rules except fighting. √
3. Never put much effort into my looks.
4. Never gone shopping. √
5. Never been open about my opinion.
6. Never gone against the law. √
7. Never gone on a fun trip.
8. Never gone on a fun trip with friends.
9. Never tried making friends.
10. Never hosted a party.
11. Never been to a party.
12. Never forgotten my first crush.
" thank you " I tell him sincerely.
" it's not a problem, at all. I don't mind helping with anything " he says looking into my eyes after that awkward moment we had in the mall. I don't miss the way he pleads with his eyes to let him in but I can't and still looking into his eyes I don't miss the hurt that flashes in his eyes as he pulls away from me.
" I should probably go " he finally says heading for the door.
~ ~ ~
Looking around my home, I can't believe how much work we've done so far. Just one more thing remaining, the cooking aspect.
I look at the phone in my hand and the wonderful people who've become my friends, yet it still feels wrong to call someone else to order my cake and make the food for tomorrow.
I remember Esperanza saying she wanted people's mind to be blown when they tasted her dishes and when they asked which catering I used, I'd be all ' no catering Amigo's, it's all this chica right here ' that's referring to Esperanza. And we'd all make Nana laugh and have fun. I know it all seems stupid but it hurts that we can't do that anymore.
I feel a sharp pain on my head and look up to see Esperanza laughing at my pained expression. I'm so shocked, I can't even move.
" you should see your face. " she says controlling her laughter.
But I remain the same.
" I think the shock's made her go blind. " I hear Mia say.
" yo Linda, Linda " Esperanza calls out, waving her hands in front of my eyes.
" and deaf " Cassy contributes seeing as I don't answer.
" Linda say something, anything. " Esperanza says trying to get a reaction out of me.
" slap me! " I finally say.
" sure " Esperanza says shrugging and then slaps me so hard I think my head just got dislocated.
" ouch!!! I didn't mean that hard. I meant slap me, pinch me, not slap me, slap me. "
They all burst out laughing while I hug the life out of Esperanza.
" so how is Nana? " I ask finally letting go.
" slightly better. Says she's attending our party tomorrow. " she says looking a bit concerned.
" she doesn't have to come she should be resting. " I say feeling bad for asking her to hold on.
" nothing's gonna change her mind. "
" I'm sorry. "
" don't be "
" so I guess we have to go shopping for your dress. " Leah says diverting our attention.
Esperanza lights up. " no need I sort of got an early birthday gift from Jack. I think it's going to be perfect for tomorrow. "
We all turn to face Jack at the same time and so don't miss the blush on his cheeks.
Jack blushing? Yeah I think hell's about to freeze over.
We go shopping for the ingredients for the cooking and it's actually fun.
I keep trying to get myself to talk to Liam but I just can't. I feel like I made the worst mistake ever by agreeing to date him.
Fine, I used to like him. And maybe he liked me too. But right now I realize that's all past tense. But I can't let our friendship become a thing of the past as well.
I've noticed his watchful gaze over the past few days, how he pulls away, he's changed but he hasn't, I just can't explain it.
But one thing's for sure, I'm tired of lying to myself. I've forgotten my first crush and I might have just got a new one.
With that thought on my mind, I and Luke gaze into each others eyes.
It's finally here is all I can think about. Well not all, considering what I plan on doing this evening. Exams finally over, now I can spend some quality time with my dad and my friends, most especially Luke, if all goes according to plan.
I and Esperanza stand before the door ready to receive our guests.
Well here goes nothing...
