We stood there staring at what felt like something out of a movie. Massive, thick webbing covered the backstop and stretched over the entire infield, anchored in all the corners by first base, second base, and third base. It was like someone had set up a big party tent made of spider silk.
As more and more kids stopped on their way to school to gawk, stare, and wonder, the obvious question could be heard percolating through the growing crowd.
Who did this?
Other equally obvious questions that popped up included 'How did someone do this?' and 'Why would someone do this?'
as well as the ever-popular 'Am I dreaming?'
After a while, the prevailing assumption became that this was the work of Dandyvale High School, whose baseball team, the Spiders, played in our division. True, they hadn't been very good and it's not like we knocked them out of the playoffs or anything, but they were the Spiders, so it fit.
