This Saturday morning, I am quietly at home reading the books from the office while my parents are away.
The day after my third birthday, my parents started teaching me how to read and write. I suppose pretending to learn during a month before I read by myself would be a good length of time, so it wouldn't be too obvious, and my God, I was wrong.
I had simply forgotten that I was supposed to be three years old and when I showed them that I learned to read and write in more or less a month, my parents took me for a genius.
The occlumency class did not go as well. I had underestimated the difficulty of having my mind being attacked. My father has never gone too far not to hurt me and is satisfied with my surface thoughts, but it took me almost six months to stop him at least once from infiltrating my mind. But my perseverance is paying, and I no longer change the appearance without wanting it except if I am surprised. And even during these cases, the change is minimal.
My parents decided that it was sufficient to join the school at the start of September 1996. There, I met Elena, Caroline, Bonnie, Matt, and Tyler. I made an extra effort to be nice and leave a good impression, but it is so hard to behave like a child that I just read the books from the higher levels during most of the classes while others do coloring.
I finish the book < Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them> by Newton Scamander. It was the last book I had to read to memorize the content of Hogwarts' mandatory courses. I replace the book and start exploring the rest of the library. I expected that there would be much less because of Malivor but strangely all the creatures I remember in the movies and books are present, even the dragons. Does that mean Malivor wasn't created?
Most of the remaining books speak about dueling technique, Herbology, or history of magic. However, I find a shelf with the bottom closets locked. I wonder what the hell is in there to lock it?
"Alohomora" I hear a little click and the door of the closet opens and I understand with just a look why it was closed!
A dozen books each more disturbing than the one before are lined up in front of me. I grab one at random, the cover seems to be made of bone. Engraved on the cover of the book, I can read a title in Latin. The Latin lessons I had taken to enter a better university go back a long way, but I believe a good translation would be Marcus Ossis' Journal>. I guess it must be one of our distant ancestors, seeing as Ossis means bones.
I begin to read the parchment that serves as pages to the book and learn more about the history of this Marcus. He was a high priest of Pluto in Rome during the Third Samnite War. He explains that he took advantage of the corpses of the warrior who died during the war to create spells intended to grant him the same powers as Pluto over death.
Most of the pages recount his horrific experimentations with more details than necessary, but the last pages are the result of his experimentations and the spells he created during them. I memorize them and go into the garden while doing the least noise possible so as not to attract attention.
Our garden is a bit special, in addition to the roses that my mother grows as a hobby, the bottom of our garden also has a greenhouse where she grows some herbs common enough for potions.
I start looking for a dead animal or insect in the bushes. I ended up finding a large spider lying on its back with its legs curled up on itself.
"Ok, let's try it. Surge et ambula" I point my finger to the spider while a thin strip of green smoke escapes from it. The corpse of the spider is agitated by spasms and then it gets up and waits without moving for my orders.
I feel a bond between me and the spider. "Go straight ahead." It starts to go straight ahead of it." Stop." And on my next order, it stops.
I'm completely fascinated. The only thing in books and movies about the undead are the zombies with Quirrell and the Inferi when Harry and Dumbledor go to retrieve the fake talisman of Salazar Slytherin.
Looking a little, I ended up finding a dead mouse along the fence of the garden. It has already begun to decompose, and it has the intestines spreading on the ground
"Surge et ambula." The mouse stands up and I feel a similar link as the one with the spider forming.
I suddenly feel my head spinning a little and I need to sit down. I think I overestimated the amount of power it takes to animate corpses.
I keep manipulating them to see how far they can go. After a number of tests with the things I found in the garden, I realize that the creatures brought back to life are much stronger than they should have been when alive. I don't know if it's due to the fact that they no longer have the mental limiter that prevents them from using all their strength not to hurt themselves or if it's due to an increase in strength thanks to magic but it's always good to know. However, the two creatures are excessively slow, their highest speed is what could be equivalent to trotting compared to their species' speed. I'd have to try with an animal who died more recently to see if it's due to the decomposition of the bodies.
I think the experiment is successful and it's time to release them.
"Dormies in aeternum." The mouse and the spider collapse on the floor completely inanimate, and I feel my dizziness dissipate, as if the magic was returning to me.
I shouldn't brag too much about being able to do this, something tells me that if the books were locked up, it was for a good reason. I'm pretty sure it's considered black magic.
I quickly go home and put the book back in the cupboard. I jump when I hear the door open and a voice in my back.
"So, sweetie, how did it go with Grandma today?"
"It was fun! I played in the garden all the afternoon."
"What did you learn today." I take the first-year metamorphosis book and show it to her. " Ho! It brings back some memories. Do you want Mommy to show you the spells in the book? It's still a little bit early for you to do magic, but that way you'll already see the spells before we get your wand."
The poor one, if she knew that I already master these spells without a wand. I imagine the shocked expression on her face. Quite hilarious.
