"Mommy!" Christian said as he ran into Pearl's arms.
"Hello sweet boy. I missed you so much!" Pearl said. She handed him the gifts she had brought him. Tia smiled as Isla came to her as well, hugging her and smiling. She handed over Alex and Pearl kissed him and hugged him.
"I can't believe how much I missed them." Pearl said.
"They missed you, too." Tia said.
"Where's Sebastian?" Pearl asked.
Just as she finished the sentence, the side door of the living room opened and there he stood. He STOOD. Pearl gasped and put her hands over her mouth as tears ran down her cheeks. He took a step forward, shifting his weight on his cane and walking toward her. Auggie stood behind him, smiling.
Pearl waited where she stood, allowing him to accomplish what he intended to. He crossed the room and stood in front of her. She looked at him, this strong and gorgeous man with the kind eyes. He had grown a beard and looked so much better. His face had color. His eyes sparkled.
"Bash… " Pearl began.
"I love you. I love you so much. I missed my wife." Sebastian said.
"You are walking." Pearl said, choking back her emotions.
"I am. I have worked so hard." He said. "And I'm glad that you are here to see the pay off. It was all for you, always for you."
She hugged him. She hugged him and inhaled his scent. She had missed him, too.
"We needed our queen back. The entire country missed you." Auggie said.
Sebastian pulled back and looked at Pearl. He took her face in his hand and tilted her chin so he could look into her eyes.
"I'm sorry." He said sincerely.
"I know." She said. "It's ok."
"It's not. But I promise, it will be." He said. He leaned down and kissed her. Christian clapped and danced. Isla closed her eyes and said "Awwwwww Daddy kissed Mommy!" Everyone smiled.
"Have dinner with me tonight. I'd like us to talk. To just… be us again." Sebastian said.
"Of course. I'd love that." Pearl said. He smiled and nodded.
"Good." He said.
********************************
After a long bath and a few hours with the kids in the garden, Pearl was ready for dinner. She was putting on her earrings when a knock at the door interrupted her.
She opened it to see Maggie there.
"Maggie! Hey lady." Pearl said, giving her a hug.
"Welcome home. How are you?" She asked.
Pearl remembered the last day of her stay in Wyoming. The horse ride with Aiden, running as fast as possible over the open country, the mountains in the background, the wind in her hair. She felt free and had finally let go of it all. They ran and raced all day, and with it, letting go of every single thing she had carried for so long.
"I am so good. I have never been better." Pearl said, smiling and exhaling.
"I want you to know that I am proud of you. I want you to know that I love you." Maggie said. Pearl smiled and put her head down.
"Thank you." She said.
"And I want you to know that Sebastian has been in hell. He loves you, Pearl. He truly does. Everyday that goes by, he works harder and harder to be the man he needs to be for you. After his last surgery, all he wanted was to be normal again. He asked so many times what he would do to walk, to be a husband and father again, to be able to make love to you. It was all he focused on." Maggie said, choked up.
Pearl sighed and nodded. "I know."
"I hope you do. That man has loved you since the moment he first saw you. I hope the two of you can work it out." Maggie said. "I'm glad you're home."
Pearl hugged her and thanked her. She sat on the bed after Maggie left the room and thought about what she had said. Pearl knew that Sebastian loved her. She knew he was a good man. And after being away and learning so much about herself, she knew that acknowledging these things was important but not everything. There was more to life than a man's word. She took a breath and headed down to dinner.
