But Harkin showed no signs of discontent. His face was hard and serious as he held his bow.

"Do not take this lightly," the Captain warned, "the wild is fraught with danger. Where civilization does not manage to extend its roots, creatures of the night will plant theirs. Choose ten men to take with you – and choose them wisely," the Captain said.

A few eyes flickered in surprise at that. Sending eleven chevalar on a ranging mission was rare, especially for such a simple one. They had a lot of territory to cover. They could make more use of the men better by sending many small parties and emphasising speed.

"As you say, Captain," Harkin said, raising his head to look at those around him. It was then that the men straightened up a little and sent friendly nods his way, pretending that they had some sort of friendship with him so that they might be picked for his party.

Harkin looked over them as though they didn't exist, not bothering if he offended anyone.
