Georgina asks the Bladderworts for her cover-up money and Avalor reluctantly agreed. She thanks Rose for saving her that day.
FIFTY-NINE
I peeked through the backdoor and was quick to hide when I saw a male nurse heading towards this way.
After making sure several times there was no one in the hallway, I slid in furtively and headed down to my destination, my hawk like eyes scanning for any incoming danger.
I quickly entered the room in which 'CHANGING ROOM' was written above the door frame and closed the door behind me.
I instinctively relaxed my shoulders a bit when I noticed no one was in the room. I rushed to a locker and opened.
No uniform.
I opened the next one.
Still no uniform.
I moved to the next one.
Splendid!
Five lockers now and no uniforms.
I moved to the next locker and when I saw a light blue uniform, I quickly grabbed it and grinned excitedly.
Finally, I got it.
I changed into the uniform which was thankfully clean and not smelly. I then took out the fake glasses I brought from my purse and put it on.
I shoved my clothes into a bag and threw it out the window.
I won't be needing you anymore.
After putting on my nose mask and scrubs, I walked out of the room with a relaxed composure.
I took a look at my watch and the glowing hands read 11:55 am.
Five minutes more.
I casually put my hand on my pocket as I walked down the hall to a familiar room. I opened the door quietly and slid in.
"Hello!" I beamed at Matilda.
"Hi!" she waved at me excitedly.
"Do you want to play a game?" I sat besides her on the bed filled with toys.
"Game?! No, I'm playing with my toys now" she took a small doll and stroke its hair.
"But if you play this game with me, you get a special reward" I smiled as her eyes lit up when she heard the word-reward.
"Reward?!" she grinned.
"Yeah, but since you're busy playing with your doll, I'm just going to have to give it to someone else" I shrugged and was about to stand up when she grabbed my hand.
"No, no. I want to play!" she whined.
"Ok, Ok. So the game goes like this" she scooted closer and I put my lips close to her ear.
"You're going to pretend to be asleep when another lady comes in the room. When she leaves, I will take to a park and you can enter a swing" I whispered into her ear.
"Really?!" she giggled and I nodded.
"OK, I'll play"
"She's coming. Now go under your blanket and close your eyes. Remember, don't move nor make a sound" she rushed into her blanket and closed her eyes tightly.
Just in time, another nurse with brown hair tied in a bun walked in the room and raised her eyebrows when she saw me.
"I already put her to sleep, you can move to the next room" I said with a cool tone.
"Okay, but weren't you supposed to be in the other room, Maya?" she asked.
"Yeah but ma'am asked me to take care of Matilda, You know she's really fond of me" I shrugged casually.
Please get out now.
"Yeah, that's true" she smiled and quietly left the room.
I sighed out of relief and peeped through the door to make sure the coast was clear.
I went back into the room and grabbed the wheelchair by the closet.
"Can I open my eyes now?" Matilda mumbled.
"Yeah," I opened the wheelchair and set it close to the bed.
"Put on your sweater, we need to leave now," I helped her with the sweater.
After she was safely in the wheelchair and I took all her necessities, I pushed the wheelchair down the hall as quickly as I could.
The nursing home patients took their naps every day by twelve pm and they ate lunch by two pm after the nap which meant I have only two hours to take Matilda out of the hospital and back into the hospital before two pm without getting caught.
Talk about mission impossible.
As I got close to the backdoor, my footsteps get more hasty and I added more energy to the wheelchair.
I was about to reach for the door handle when someone from across the hall said,
"Stop!"
My entire body froze at that moment and all that registered in my head was one word.
RUN!
I looked over to see another man marching to the other one and I relaxed when I saw it wasn't me he was talking to.
I opened the door and stepped out of the building, the vigorous sunlight attacking my body.
I moved to the red Audi parked by the roadside and successfully put Matilda into the backseat as I moved to sit in the passenger seat.
"Hey, Matilda!" Lily, who was by the driver seat, wearing an exaggerated full black outfit and a vandana tied to cover her face, beamed at Matilda.
"Hi!" Matilda waved.
"Let's get going. We have limited time" I said and as normal, she rolled her eyes at me.
"Calm down, nurse. We're committing a crime for the first time, rejoice in the moment!!" she turned on the radio and started dancing.
"Lily, are you insane?" I turned off the radio.
"Hey!" she whined.
"I knew it was a bad idea for you to come. Just drive before we get caught!!" I uttered harshly.
"Duh!" she stuck out her tongue before she ignited the engine and we roared into the road.
"Man, I love this car, why does Lorenzo always give you the nice things?" she pouted.
"He bought you an iPhone last year, got you the gucci dress you wanted for your birthday. He is currently building a condo for you at Alabama because you said you want to live there. We all know who Lorenzo's favourite is, don't patronize me" I smirked.
"Whatever. I told him I wanted a car but he refused"
"That's because the last time you took his car to a party, it ended deserted in a river and you walked back home, drenched from head to toe" I chuckled at the memory from three years back.
"I told you, the car rolled into the river and I went after it but couldn't save it!" she screeched as her cheeks turned red and I laughed at her face.
She always turned red whenever she was embarrassed.
"And that was three years ago, I'm not the same person. I've changed" she argued.
"Really? Then who was the person who 'accidentally' drove Iris's car into a kiosk two months ago?" I raised my eyebrows amusingly and she groaned.
"I tried to park close to the kiosk so I could get some waffles, and before I knew it, the car drove right through the kiosk. How is that my fault?!" she yelled and I doubled over from laughing.
Lily always had an excuse for everything.
When she falls, she blames the floor.
When she burns a dish, she blames the gas cooker.
When she breaks a glass, she blames gravity.
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever makes you sleep at night," I chuckled.
"Is she your sister?" Matilda asked me from behind.
"Yes, she is my most annoying sister" I grinned.
"And she is my most irritating sister" Lily rolled her eyes.
"It's obvious you love each other" Matilda said quietly.
Lily and I looked at each other for some moments and before we knew it, we burst into unkempt laughter.
"Yeah, I love her ass" I laughed.
"I love you, bish" Lily slapped my arm with a wide smile.
After the short drive of fifteen minutes, Lily parked the car and we got out. I put Matilda back on her chair and we wheeled into the abandoned building.
Iris came out from a room and walked towards us.
"Everything ready?" I asked.
"Yap, you should get changed" she said and took Matilda.
"But this isn't a park" Matilda whined.
"I promise, I'll take you to the Park when we're done here" I kneeled down and held her hand.
"Promise?" she brought her pinky finger out and I hooked my finger to hers with a smile.
"Promise"
I went into a room and saw a small bag on the bed. I took the contents out and got changed into an old hospital gown.
After I loosed my hair from the ponytail and arranged the doll inside the small cot close to the hospital bed, I sat on the bed and covered my legs with the clean blanket.
When I was ready, I called Iris and a few seconds later, the door was opened and Matilda came in, being pushed by Iris.
Lily was behind them, dressed as a male nurse.
I looked into Matilda's eyes and prayed for this to work.
We were going to find out how our mother was killed.
We're going to reenact the day our mother was killed in front of Matilda.
