Bab 61: Witch Doctor
Landing on the central mountain, Evos stared at the abandoned castle in amazement, "Why is there a castle all the way up here?" Memories of watching the anime and reading the manga washed over me, and I still wondered if I was in a fever dream.
"This used to be the castle of the old king before he was overthrown. Now it is inhabited by two crazy doctors. Let's go see if anyone's home." Walking up to the open castle gates, we stepped into the castle with no noticeable change. Like the anime, snow-covered the court and ice with a wind that howled in the enclosed space.
Cupping my hands around my mouth, I yelled, "Anybody home!!" My shout echoed shortly before being drowned out by the wind, "I guess we have to check. Why don't we split up? Things would go much faster."
Evos looked at me like I was crazy but sighed and turned to go a separate way, "If something eats me, I will haunt your ship forever." I chuckled, "You think that's a threat, but I would love for a ghost to haunt my ship. Besides, it would be a great test subject."
Evos flipped me off, only making me grin wider, "I wonder if he finds Chopper or Kureha. Either way, this should be fun." I walked towards the staircase with a skip in my step leading to the castle's next floor.
Opening the first door, I came across. I immediately recognized the room. It was the same one Kureha treated Nami in. As I stepped fully into the room, I felt a sense of danger and tilted my head to the side as a scalpel shot past me, hitting the opposite wall.
"That no way to treat potential patients, assaulting them with deadly weapons." Kureha scoffed, stepping out from behind the door holding a bottle by the neck, "I know when someone is injured, and you're not, so get the hell out of my house."
Kureha sat down in a chair, leaning back as she brought the bottle to her weathered lips, "As I fellow doctor, I wanted to exchange some notes. I've heard some magical things about your healing powers."
"Oh please, if you're a doctor, you know that's a load of bull. I'm just called a witch because of how I treat my patients." I pulled out a chair and sat across from the touchy old lady. "And how harshly do you treat your patients."
"What is this an interrogation? I don't see why this is any of your business. However, I must ask why you are in Paradise. I didn't know the Yonko could so easily dispatch their most powerful subordinates." Kureha had a sparkle in her eye as she grinned, revealing she knew my secret.
"I knew I couldn't hide it for too long. I didn't know my face was so famous." The witch doctor's laughter was a sharp bark that echoed off the stone walls. "I made sure to remember your face. You're too dangerous of a person to go unnoticed."
Leaning forward in my seat, I clasped my hands, "What do you know about the Will of D and the Void Century."
Kureha's smiled faded, "Straight to the point, are we?" I nodded, "The question has always plagued me, and I find few, even with the initial, are even aware of the nature behind the name."
"You youngsters always rushing headfirst into danger. People like you are what keep my business afloat. If you want to know about the Void Century, I advise that you find someone who can read the Poneglyphs." I shook my head, "You know that impossible, and not what I'm asking. I want to know, how did you come to learn of it."
Leaning back in her chair, Kureha smiled came back, "Oh, a few years ago, a historian was injured and paid me a generous sum to heal him. While he was bedridden, he went on and on about his quest."
With that, Kureha stood, "Now I would ask you to leave, seeing that you're not injured. I see no reason to have you in my house." Sighing, I knew that she wasn't telling the truth, but short of tying her down and forcing it out of her, there was no way she would talk.
"Fine, we'll get out of your hair. Also, when you see Luffy tell him that his brother will be waiting in Alabasta for him. Though we can't stay long."
"I don't know this Luffy figure. Is he a friend of yours?" I pulled up the hood to my cloak, "Not yet, but soon." Closing the door behind me, I looked around, trying to find Evos, "This place wasn't too big in the anime. I hope that holds up."
I found Evos deep within the tunnels under the castle, warming his hands over a fire sitting across from Tony Tony Chopper, "Hey Soren, that was quick. Also, how did you know about the talking reindeer."
Evos stood up to greet me, and Chopper hid behind him, glancing around his legs as if I couldn't see him, "It's because I'm the closest thing to a god on this planet." I stopped in front of Evos before ruffling his hair, "Hello, there are you a Chimera?"
Chopper jumped back, holding up his hands like he was ready to fight, "I'm a reindeer, you fool, what's a Chimera." I smiled and started to rummage around my pockets, "That's a shame I haven't been able to figure out how to incorporate human DNA yet. Would you mind if I collect a few samples? Just a clump of hair will do."
Chopper shook his head rapidly, "Nononononono, stay away from me, Human!" Frowning, I pulled out a vial filled with tiny yellow balls, "If you're not a Chimera, you must have eaten the Homi Homi no Mi, right. Well, I've been working on a drug to boost the powers of Zoan users. It's not much use to my people, but maybe it can help you."
I tossed Chopper the vial, and he caught it after fumbling around a few times, "Come on, Evos, we need to get going." My subordinate fell into step behind me, and we left the castle on his cloud.
