Bab 43: I have Returned
Escaping Thriller Bark was pretty easy. I just punched a hole in the wall, and I left two devil fruit richer. I didn't know what items I would infuse the fruits into, but the invisibility power would probably be useful.
We left the Florian Triangle the next week, and It felt so good to have the sun on my face. Ace was pleased as he told me his power seemed to increase while in the. I was pretty sure it was because the humidity had changed, but I didn't want to break his spirit.
"How long before we reach the next island. I'm tired of eating only fish." Ace was using a sail instead of his devil fruit powers, and Gibby was happily swimming along. "Are you kidding me? I could eat fish all day. You know how hard this was to get on my home island."
Ace looked into the distance wistfully, "Do you have anyone you're waiting on, Soren?" Wondering where a question like that came from, I looked over at Ace, "Not really, I'm pretty sure my parents are dead, and I was kept separately from the other slaves in Mary Geoise. Though I do have a teacher, hopefully, I can see him again."
"I have a brother. His name is Luffy. That the other reason why I wanted to leave. I've been tracking his progress, and we should be able to catch him in Drum Island." Nodding, I realized I had totally forgotten about Luffy.
"Do you have any other family?" Ace smiled, "Yeah, Curly Dadan, my foster mother raise Luffy and me with her bandit family."
"Do you know who your real father is?" Ace stiffened but only for a second, "I don't want to talk about him. Besides, you wouldn't believe me anyway." Not pushing him, I turned back to my latest experiment.
Though I enjoyed the food in general, it wasn't always the easiest to digest, and while I could make my stomach acid even stronger, I really didn't want to have vomit capable of melting stone.
Shaking a test tube, I checked everything one more time before preparing myself and knocked the vial back. My entire body started to convulse, and it was almost as bad as a devil fruit, but the taste was so much more distinct.
"Whoa, Soren, what the hell did you just drink." Wiping my mouth, I could feel the cocktail work its way down my esophagus. "It was a vail containing millions of phototrophs, my system shouldn't be able to digest the solution, and I'm hoping I can assimilate with them."
"I have no idea what you just said? Can you say that in a common tongue?" Groaning, I turned over on my side, sure that my face was turning green, "If it works, you'll see the results." I was in agony the next hour as I stopped my immune system from destroying buying the intruders.
Then I sensed it one of my blood cells collided with the phototrophs, and they started to evolve, focusing my body's energy into the change. I cheered as the mutation stuck. The specialized spell started to multiple, and I stopped suppressing my body's immune system.
I had the powerful urge to pee in the few minutes, and I cringed when instead of the bright yellow stream, it was visibly green. Realizing it was only the phototrophs, I relaxed and enjoyed the break.
Sighing as I sat back down, Ace was looking at me weirdly, "Can you please refrain from doing mad scientist stuff anymore." I could actively feel my cells undergoing photosynthesis. It was like I was always eating.
"Good new Ace, I will no longer have to eat solid foods. I am now half plant." Ace cocked his head, "Tell me again, what was in that vial?" Yawning, I took my shirt off, opening myself to the sun, "I basically in a symbiotic relationship with a species of microscopic plants. I'm not even a human as far as genetics are concerned."
Ace still didn't understand, but he wasn't forced to take three years of AP Biology, so that I couldn't expect much. I started to think If I should do the same thing, Gibby, but it wouldn't help such a large creature.
The next few days were uneventful, and Ace was almost going insane only eating fish and the dried fruit we packed when I spotted the giant trees of Sabaody Archipelago, "Land Ho!" Ace shot up, "Finally, I can have something other than fish."
We found a spot where Ace could dock his boat, and I told Gibby not to get in trouble before climbing onto the island. Ace had only spent a few days here to get his ship coated before he set sail.
"I just realized we don't have anywhere to sleep tonight. And it's getting late." Looking up at the sun, I noticed that I was starting to feel hungry, 'Note to self I can not subsist off of photosynthesis alone.'
"Don't worry. I know a place where we can stop for the night." Smiling, I looked at the familiar bar opening the door. I was prepared to be treated by a shocked elderly couple, but a frying pan caught me in the face.
Falling on the ground, I grasped my now broken nose that was already healing, "Ow, what the hell! After who knows how many years, I come back, and a frying pan greets me."
Shakky put out her cigarette and glaring at me, "You haven't written once since that last time you visited. We almost thought you forgot about us." Sighing, I cracked my nose back in place, "I guess I didn't but still did you have to throw a frying pan. And how did you injure me? Not even cannons can do that anymore."
Shakky grinned, "You're still a thousand years too young to think about going against me."
