"Wow!"
One thing's for sure, Maraiah face was priceless. She looked so blown away.
"I love the color complement. I've never seen any thing so brilliant. Our home has a dark theme to it so..." explained Maraiah as we walked along the halls to my room. I wonder what her home looks like. I'll probably find out soon.
"Well, this is my room", I said letting out a breath as I swung open the door.
She gasped while looking around and I really couldn't blame her.
I had decorated my room by myself. Okay, maybe not completely by myself because I had asked some of Mary's friends to help, but still. The walls were painted cream and I had changed all the light bulbs from white to yellow, mainly because white light disturbs my eyes.
I could tell that she was pretty surprised. I'm guessing it's not the ideal look a female teenager would be going for, but I love the feel it gives. Aesthetic.
"So, tell me about yourself", she said while plopping down on my bed and looking around.
"Well, I'm sixteen. I have an older brother. I'm a science student and I love a lot of stuff. How about you come over on Saturday and we can talk more?" I said, not wanting to carry on the conversation.
"Well...,"Someone knocked at the door and Mary walked in, cutting Maraiah off.
"Dinner Reyna!" She echoed from the other side.
"We'll be down in a minute!" I called as she closed the door.
"Who's she?" asked Maraiah.
"Mary. She's my maid", I said with shrug as I slid of the bed.
"Oh." She said.
"We'd better get going before Mary gets back or she'll have my head," I said while getting up.
"Yeah we should," Maraiah said while giggling.
"So Reyna, how do you like the countryside so far? It must be a huge shift from what you're accustomed with", said Mr Brown.
"It is, but it is not as bad. I like how quiet it is here, away from the hustle and ruckus of the city", I said without looking up from my plate," May I be excused?" I asked, hopefully looking at my mother.
"Sorry. She has an eating disorder. She's been through so much and we just had to move back here because of her", my mum explained as I walked away from the dining room.
Just to be clear, I don not have an eating disorder. I'm just so familiar with watching my weight because watching models on the runway in my mother's events makes me feel fat.
The talking continued and I didn't miss the concern on the faces of the Brown's couple, nor the hurt on Maraiah's. I didn't need their sympathy, and I sure as hell didn't need their concern.
For once, I'm actually glad I'm in the country, less reasons to be social. All I wanted was to be alone, but I know solitude is a luxury I cannot afford regardless of how many figures there are in my bank account.
I finally let myself into my room, letting the door shut itself behind me. Avoiding the mirrors, I changed out of my clothes into a baggy shirt and boxer shorts.
Despite being tired, I was still a little hungry. I decided to call the kitchen for some macoroni and cheese.
I pulled my laptop out of my drawer and settled down to watch a Korean series after wrapping my hair in a bun. As soon as the show started, a knock on the door interrupted me.
"Hey. I just wanted to let you know that we're leaving. Here's my number if you ever need anything. Also, your mom mentioned you're to attend the same school as I and my brothers, so we'll pick you up on the way to school," Maraiah said while handing me a crumpled up peice of paper with a sad smile.
"Sorry about dinner", I said, starting to feel bad," how about you come over for lunch next Saturday. Let me make up for it?"
"Sure. See you on Monday," she said with a brightened mood.
I watched her figure retreat back the way she came just as my food arrived. I took the cart from the maid and retreated back to my room.I noticed the curtains were slightly open. Weird. I shut them and climbed back into bed.
I unwrapped the cling film from the plate and dug in, letting the cheese melt away in my mouth. I put the plate back on my tray and left it outside my door when I was done.
Climbing back into bed, I let the episode lull me to sleep after two hours of binging. But just before unconsciousness pulled me in, the strangest sound tore through the silent void of the night.
A blood curling howl.
