Taking the meat of the jaguar and the snake both embarked on their journey again. Their Pathway lead to a mountainous region. The path was cut into the sides of a jagged mountain, so there was space for only one person to walk even if they were walking sideways like a crab. The fog that had receded till now returned with a vengeance. The entire pathway was fully covered, so that nothing was visible upfront.
For safety reasons, Lumian tied a rope to his waist and tied the other end to Eru's hips. This way it will safeguard his safety as they walk through the perilous pathway.
Eru glanced down at the steep fall. 'If I fall down, I'm not sure if I can even find my bones,' he thought with a gulp. Just as he stepped sideways, the path crumbled under his feet. Her feet slipped, and he tilted forward. "Ahh," he gasped as he went down. The rope tied to his waist saved his life, but he was swinging around, banging on the walls without any balance. Finding his dagger in his boot, he stabbed a small crevice in the wall and held on.
Lumian acted fast and held onto the rope tied around his waist. Eru hanged down literally on a rope. Holding it tight, Eru glanced up at his uncle. "Uncle.... careful...I will try to climb up so stay steady," he whispered. Gripping onto the coarse rope, Eru climbed inch by inch. All his rope climbing training came to use this time. Soon she reached her uncle's height.
He gripped onto his hands and dragged Eru to the small path. Whilst all this struggle the two bags of meat fell into the ditch, but no one bothered.
They both continued on with perseverance. Soon they reached a huge black slab erected on the ground. It was so huge that it seemed to be thicker and taller than the world trees surrounding it.
"What....is that?" Eru whispered in awe. He had never seen a magnificent structure like this before. Hesitating a little, he stepped towards it. As soon as he walked closer, the wall hummed. Its melody a little scratchy but very much cheerful in tune. It was as if it was trying to convey to him its mood.
Eru stepped back again. "Uncle... what is that?" he whispered.
Lumina glanced at him and at the huge black slab with a frown. "That's our milestone. It was erected almost twenty thousand years ago. Our ancestors erected it as a wall against the serpents." he whispered, but his frown deepened.
He stepped closer to the black slab, and the humming stopped. "Eru don't go close to this ever again. There is a lot of residual magic in it, which might end up hurting you,"
Eru nodded. He also did not want to cause any trouble. Clenching his fists, he walked around it without getting close. The slab hummed a sad melody.
Irrespective Eru did not approach it carelessly.
"Hurry along," Lumian called from ahead.
Eru threw a last glance at the black slab and walked away. He caught up to his uncle and strode beside him. "Uncle... what exactly happened in this war?" he whispered curiously.
Lumian glanced down at him. "Once long ago, the serpent demon race ran rampant around our kingdom. They killed, maimed and plundered our resources. Unwilling to accept this, Seven elders fought against them. It was a great war that lasted almost... thousand years," he finished with a sigh.
Eru listened with his ears sharpened. "Thousand years? how did the elders survive thousand years?" he exclaimed. It was recorded that demons can live longer, but never in any history books, had he read that humans can live that long.
Lumian chuckled out loud. "It was said that the seven were immortals."
"Then why isn't it recorded so in any of the history books,"
"Of course it was to protect us. Eru, you, the royal family, are descendants of one of the immortal ancestors. And you specifically carry the strongest bloodline of all. If the news spreads that immortality runs in your blood, imagine what would happen," Lumian explained whilst cutting small branches off their path.
Eru was astonished by the fact. 'Is that why... those demons attacked me when I was a baby? No, it's not possible. The demons do not know this fact. And they were after some tear jewel.' he denied this hypothesis.
