Bab 18: Preparations
It was the start of a new day and we were making our way to Feilo Forest. We spotted Reizo waiting for us at the entrance which was unusual since he would usually wait inside Feilo Forest.
"You three have arrived. Let's begin your training."
Reizo summoned a dragon the size of three elephants and told us to get on it. The dragon is most likely a B or A rank monster. We hopped onto the dragon and it took off into the skies.
"Where are we going?" Serith asked.
"I didn't bring the monster you'll be fighting today to Feilo Forest so I'm bringing you to an area I've set up with those monsters."
"Why can't you bring the monster into Feilo Forest?" Saliza asked.
"It's not that I can't bring the monster to Feilo Forest, it's because that monster will make a mess that's tedious to clean up."
A monster that will make a mess in the forest? I hope it's not going to be gross.
As we soared through the skies, other flying monsters began fleeing at the sight of Reizo's dragon. Soon we reached our destination and the dragon landed.
We were in an area covered in webs. Five large spiders crawled into holes they made in the ground and trees. We stood on a large stone pillar free from webs in the middle of the area.
"These monsters are called verranids. Kill all five of them and I'll bring you back to the headquarters."
We got off the dragon and Reizo flew off. The verranids peeped out from their hiding spots to see if the dragon was gone. They noticed us standing on the stone pillar and crawled towards us.
I used a spell and fired a volley of fireballs at the verranids. My attacks were hurting them but it wasn't enough to stop them from crawling up the pillar.
With nowhere to go, Serith summoned a radive and flew us away from the spiders while I kept shooting at them.
One of the spiders shot webs at the radive and threw us off the radive. Saliza summoned her own radive but she wasn't able to catch me and Serith in time.
Serith summoned a doruso below him so that he wouldn't get caught in the web while I summoned a gendion below me. The moment the gendion landed, I immediately made it camouflage itself.
I positioned myself to land on the gendion and pretend to get caught in the web. Bugs aren't exactly smart so my plan should work.
One of the verranids crawled up to me and raised its fangs to inject me with venom. I thrust my sword into the verranid while keeping my body away from its fangs.
The verranid struggled and kept trying to bite me with its fangs until it died. I kicked the dead spider away from me and wiped the blood off my sword.
Serith was being attacked by two of the verranids and Saliza was trying to dodge webs that the other two were shooting at her.
One of the webs hit Saliza's radive and she jumped off right before the verranids pulled her radive out of the sky.
She aimed at one of the veranids and with a single swing of her axe she split the verranid's head in two and landed on its corpse. She then ignited the blade of her axe using a spell and threw it at the other verranid.
Serith was standing on his doruso while dodging webs that the verranids were shooting. The verranids managed to hit him with their webs and tried pulling him towards them.
Serith used his strength to stop himself from being dragged towards the spider. He grabbed the webs that were pulling him and pulled the spiders together. He then summoned an alpha burark on his shoulders to incinerate the terranids while keeping them in one place with their own webs.
Once we were finished, we scanned the bodies of the verranids.
"Scan completed, C rank monster added."
"That was pretty easy, considering how great and powerful I am." Salida boasted.
"Yes, that was it." Reizo flew down on his dragon and picked us up.
"I deliberately made this easy. I wanted to see how much you three have improved compared to last time. Since you three have improved, I'll give you the option to shorten your training."
The three of us wanted to get training over with as soon as possible so of course we wanted to shorten our training.
"Here's the deal, there'll be a test tomorrow and if you three pass the test, I'll begin your ventgard duties."
When we landed in Mezio, Reizo released us for the day and told us to prepare for our test. He didn't tell us what our test was going to be so we need to be prepared for anything.
We went to the training room and brought books we borrowed from the library to learn more spells. It was easy to learn and use spells, but the problem was that it takes time to cast a spell. The only way to instantly cast them was to register them into a weapon's skill slot, but our weapons only have one skill slot.
And then it hit me. I could just use two weapons and have two skill slots available. Reizo never said we couldn't dual wield weapons so it should be fine.
I picked up a spare sword and registered a spell it's skill slot. When I tried to simultaneously cast both sword skills, I could only cast one of them. I checked my bracelet and found out that I only had one skill.
I tried to see if there was any information about this in one of the books I borrowed and found a book about weapon skills. When you wield two weapons with different skills, you can only use the skills of one of the weapons.
Guess I'm stuck with only one skill slot. I'll still keep the spare sword so I can dual wield in battle.
Saliza saw me swinging around two swords while she was exercising. "Oh, that's a good idea!" She grabbed a spare axe and started swinging two axes around.
"I don't think it's a good idea to use more than one two-handed weapon." Serith said.
"Nonsense, more weapons equals more power!" Saliza grabbed another axe and placed it in her mouth.
"You do realize that two-handed weapons are supposed to be wielded with two hands right?" I asked.
Saliza ignored me and proceeded on to put as many axes as she can around her body.
"I am unstoppable now!" Saliza said as she struggled to walk over to a dummy. She tried to hit the dummy and dropped nearly all of her axes.
"Okay, maybe using multiple axes isn't a good idea. Hey Serith, since you use a one handed sword, why don't you try to dual wield."
Serith, without even bothering to try using two swords, said that he preferred to use one since it suits him.
For the rest of the day Saliza and Serith exercised and trained with their weapons while I read the monster encyclopedia to find monsters we may potentially fight tomorrow.
The next day, Reizo brought us back to Feilo Forest for our test. He hasn't told us what our test was going to be yet. We reached an area that was being blocked by a large fallen tree.
"For today's test I'll let you use as many skills and spells and you want. The test is very simple."
Reizo kicked the tree backwards and dented the wood. The tree got up and revealed itself to be a monster called arborex. It is a large green T-rex with thick wooden armor around its body. This was a B rank monster.
"Kill this thing and you pass." Reizo said before disappearing.
The beast roared and charged towards us.
