"Uhh...my head." Reizo woke up on the sofa in the head ventgard office. He recognized the place and groaned.
"Your captain was an alcoholic just like you, but he never once trained you while he was drunk." Meitre was organizing some paperwork and glared at Reizo when he woke up.
"I was fine with you getting drunk when you were working solo, but you're a captain now. You can't just get drunk before training your recruits and expect them to grow."
This wasn't the first lecture that Reizo received from Meitre and it probably won't be the last.
"These three managed to pass your test, so I expect you to train them to be the best that they can be. Understood?" Reizo groaned again as he gave his typical reply about not doing what he did again.
"For today you are not allowed to train your recruits, so for the rest of the day I would suggest that you practice some self-restraint and stay away from any alcohol."
After the lecture, Reizo went to the training room to prepare for tomorrow's training.
When he entered the room, I nearly crashed into him while trying to fly using fire spells. He grabbed me before I hit him and set me down.
"So you guys already figured out how to use spells?"
Serith told Reizo that we borrowed some books from the library to learn spells so that we could improve ourselves.
"I was planning to teach you guys about spells
once you've completed the first week of training, but since you guys already know how to use it, I might as well explain some of the basics of it."
The three of us paid close attention to Reizo as he started explaining more about spells.
"By now all of you already know how to use spells so you should also know that it takes a few seconds to cast them, but there is a way to cast spells immediately." He instructed Saliza to hold her axe while casting a spell and check her bracelet after doing so.
When Saliza casted a spell and shot ice out of her fingertips, a small blue circle appeared on the handle of her axe. When she checked her bracelet, she found something new. "An icon named 'skills' appeared on my screen." Saliza looked at the new screen and found the name and description of the spell she just casted.
Reizo explained that all weapons have at least one skill slot embedded into them. These skill slots will memorize the way we cast a spell and turn it into a skill which will be registered into the weapon so that we can instantly cast it again. Skills also have a cooldown depending on how much mana it uses.
Saliza could now cast the spell instantly every few seconds just by activating the skill. Saliza then casted another spell that she wanted to register into the weapon.
Her axe didn't change and her skill screen still only displayed one skill. "The weapons that I gave you only have one skill slot. Don't worry too much about skills and spells until we finished your training in feilo fields."
Reizo created a stream of water flowing out of his hands. "Some spells can also be modified. For example," The stream of water changed its colour into green. "I can change the properties of the water." The water then froze up and the ice formed itself into a small spiral sculpture while constantly changing colours. "But there is a limit to what I can add or change, so it's impossible for me to turn water into alcohol." The ice sculpture shattered itself and the remaining shards melted.
Saliza and Serith wanted to test out these new spells at feilo fields, but because of what happened earlier, Reizo wasn't allowed to train them for today.
Before Reizo left, he told us that we are free to use the training room from 6 am to 10 pm. He also told us that he will limit us to only one skill or spell usage during training.
Since we could only use a skill or spell once during training, I decided to go through the spells in the books to see if I could find one to make training easier.
Saliza and Serith were testing out the different spells that they found while I was flipping through the pages to see if I could find
something that could help me.
I reached the end of the book but I still couldn't find a spell that would make fending off grus rats easier with a single usage.
Most of the spells I found could be used to easily kill a group of rats, but they wouldn't help much with only one usage, plus the rats are scattered around me so I won't be wiping out several of them in one go. The spells that could enhance us last less than a minute.
Then I decided that if I can't find a spell to make training easier, then maybe I could find a spell that can help us earn more exp faster since leveling up makes killing rats easier.
The problem was that the rats were scattered across the field so even high costing spells that could kill several rats won't be effective with just one usage. I needed a way to gather all of the rats into one place and kill them in one fell swoop.
I tried to come up with ideas on how to do so. None of the spells I found could force the rats into an area. The best way I could do that is by getting one of the rats to call their pack, but that would also mean getting overwhelmed by them.
I remembered something from when Saliza and I got chased by a pack of rats. Before the whole pack showed up, one of the rats made a call before its pack appeared.
What if I were to somehow use that call to lure the rats into an area. Then I remembered seeing a spell that allows you to create a sound to scare off enemies.
I flipped through the book and found the page containing the spell. The steps consisted of gathering mana around your throat and thinking of a loud noise you want to make before releasing the mana by screaming.
What if I modified this spell and used it to mimic the rat's call. I gathered mana around my throat and thought about the noise that the rat made. When I screamed, I managed to make a high-pitched version of the call.
I tried it a few more times at different volumes until I got it right before registering it into the skill slot of my dagger.
"Zeigel, why and how are you screaming like a grus rat." Saliza and Serith heard me trying to replicate the sound of a grus rat for several minutes and they were starting to get irritated by it.
I told them that I'll explain it later and asked them to follow me. I brought them near the entrance of Feilo Forest and asked Saliza to help me sneak in.
Saliza didn't know what I was trying to do but agreed anyways. Serith didn't want to be apart of what I was doing because he didn't want to break the rules and piss Reizo off. I managed to convince him to come by telling him that it was a plan to make us stronger and impress Reizo. He really needs to stop fanboying over Reizo.
Once we snuck in, I asked the two to hide in a bush with me. I summoned a grus rat and made it move far away from us and used my skill to mimic the call. A few seconds later, several rats came out of a nearby grass patch to investigate the area and my summoned rat.
Now that I confirmed that the call worked, we snuck out of feilo fields and I explained what my plan was to Saliza and Serith.
My plan was that during training, we would kill one of the rats and let the others escape. I will do the same thing as I did earlier to lure out the pack of rats into an area.
Saliza and Serith would get into a position where the rats wouldn't notice them. When the rats have been lured out, the two of them would ambush and attack the rats with the strongest skill they have. I would then chase down any rats that managed to escape.
The two of them thought that the plan I came up with was brilliant and agreed that it would work. But Serith realized one problem with this plan. The two of them would gain alot of exp out of this, but I won't be gaining much.
He was right. The only exp I'm getting is from any of the rats that managed to escape the attack, and that's if any escaped.
I wanted to change the plan and make it so that I would gain more exp, but there wasn't anything I could change.
Even if I joined the ambush, I can't use another spell so I would only take down a few rats, and if any rats escape, no one would be able to stop them.
I told them that it was fine with it. They're more passionate about being a ventgard than me anyways.
Serith thanked me for coming up with such a plan and letting him and Saliza gain more than me. He even took a bow to show his appreciation.
"I think it's safe to say that we're lucky to meet you Zeigel." Saliza patted me on the back. I'm just glad that they trust and respect me.
