"Your father got a call from Mr.Jones, the alpha of Chicago, due to his declining health conditions, he needs to appoint his son,Elliott, as the next alpha as soon as possible. But before that,he want him to get married. And guess what, sweetie? They want to meet you for the purpose." my mother said, answering my question.I listened in extreme shock. The two news got me all destroyed from within.Words were not ready to emerge from my mouth, I found myself in lack of vocabulary. My mother asked, reading my pale face, "What happened, aren't you happy with the news?"I looked at her face, I could not believe she is my mother. Telling her daughter that the most dangerous men ever known to her are coming with marriage proposal. Marriage? No, I would rather prefer the term destruction. No matter with whom I'll be married to, my life is surely on the verge of demolition. "What's the matter,El?" my mother asked with a face, which was excited before but frazzled now.Does she really cares about how it matters to me? "But how could you bring two marriage proposals at a time for me?"vexation clearly inevitable in my voice, when I questioned it.
"El,it's good that you are at least given to choose between one of them, and you are nominated as one of their potential brides. You won't be marrying both of them. You got a choice, which most of the women in our world don't get." My mother tried to convince me.
I knew what she said was right. In our world women are not given the right to choose whether it is school, college or marriage.
Although her words were asking me to believe her but I could not convince myself.
Even being in this world,I had kept some hope buried deep within me. Hope that someday, I would fly like a bird, whose wings aren't confined to a cage, that day I would take the longest flight and never look back to the world below me. But now those hopes seems like mere dreams of silly me.
My mother was looking at me with ascertainity in her eyes. I still did not wanted to respond.
Umberto who was standing near the door, was out of sight now. Servants were nowhere to be traced. It was mourning silence in the house.
And a voice of footsteps emerged from the doorway. I turned my vision toward the door, it was my father. Me and my mother stood up at the same time as soon as we discovered him.
My mother went to take his coat. "You told her about the marriage proposals, right?" was my father's first question. "yes, I did." my mother replied politely. "She will need to forget all her childishness and behave like a lady in front of them."my father ordered. "I will take care of it."said my mother.
Are you kidding me?
"I needed to share something important with you both, come have a seat." my father said in a voice unusually calmer.
Yet I could not rely on the fact that 'something'
he's going to share, will have any pacifying effect on the streaming circumstances.
