Bab 8: TILL DEATH DO US PART?
"Something smells good. Mandy?" I walked towards the kitchen where I was pretty sure the Aroma was coming from. I only had breakfast all day and I didn't know how hungry I was until I entered the house. The strong sweet aroma made me realise I was famished. I met Mandy in the kitchen cooking up a storm. She turned when I entered,rushed over to give me a hug and a huge lovely smile that somehow washed away some of the stress from the day "Soph! You're back. I didn't hear you come in. How was your day? How was work? How are you?"
I smiled back,my first genuine smile since I left for work,"My day was fine,work was work and I am famished!"
She laughed "Don't worry. Dinner will be ready in ten. Meanwhile go freshen up while I finish up here. I promise the food will be on the table by the time you come back down." I didn't need to be told twice. I went up to my room and soaked myself in the tub for the whole of ten minutes. I didn't feel like leaving as the water soothed every joint in my body."Soph! It's been thirty minutes. Are you alright up there?! "Mandy's voice jolted me from my moment of bliss. "Coming" I all but shouted. I reluctantly left the tub,put on a pair of PJs and strolled downstairs. The table looked like a feast "Babe,what is going on? Do we have people coming over? " I asked with wide eyes. "I didn't have much to do today. I got tired of watching the television so decided to cook a little something. I went to the market and got carried away. I hope you have a large appetite" We sat down, gave thanks for the food and started to eat
I screamed when I took a spoonful of the Jellof rice "Dayuuuum! Mandy this is delicious. You can cook like this? "
She laughed out"There are so many things you don't know about me my dear friend. This is one of them"
"You got that right,I didn't know this about you"
We continued our dinner in silence. We cleared the table when we were done and stocked the leftovers in the freezer. We started doing the dishes
When we were done with the dishes I took her hand and lead her towards the exit" Come on. I want to show you something but please don't scream, we'll be sanctioned for disturbance. I went for a little shopping today and I got this baby for us" I opened the door and pointed to where the car was parked
The moment she saw the car she shrieked and jumped towards the car. She continued screaming as she went round the car
"Mandy! that's enough!" I whispered, shushing her, looking around us as I ran after her and dragged her inside the house. I knew she was going to react that way
"Soph that is a beautiful car! Congratulations" she said in between sniffs.
I was confused "What's wrong? Is it something I said?" I grabbed a tissue from the table and handed it to her
"No it's not,I'm sorry" she wiped her eyes and nose "These are tears of joy Soph. I know firsthand what you went through, how much you suffered and seeing you now with the house,the car,it's like you're been compensated for all the hardships you endured and I'm just grateful and happy for you, that's all"
I looked at her,smiling affectionately. The only definition of love I'd ever known was standing before me. I had no doubt she was truly happy for me. I reached out and hugged her "I'm grateful too for all of this,but I'm more grateful for you. I don't know how I would have gone through those hard days without you and I want you to know one thing Mandy,it's not just my life that has changed, yours too. If it happens for one of us,it's happened for both of us. You are my sister after all. Now wipe those happy tears darling or you'll make me cry too" I gave her a heartfelt smile. She smiled back and hugged me tightly one more time. I knew what the hug meant, she didn't have to say anything. We bid each other goodnight and went to our various rooms.
As I laid down to sleep my mind wandered to my parents and my sister. I wondered how they were doing. I see them on the news sometimes, attending conferences all over the world and all of that, but that was as much as I knew. I've told myself a thousand times that I didn't care anymore, that I no longer feel hurt or betrayed, that I didn't yearn for their love anymore, that they were dead to me. But I also knew I was lying to myself, I've missed the love of my parents all these years. They were not the affectionate kind but I at least knew they loved me. Until they didn't. I felt the hot liquid rolling down the side of my eye and I quickly wiped them with my palms. No more! I would not waste another tear for them. After a while sleep took over and the nightmares began

In one of the Estates in Ikeja,a certain couple were at it again. Their neighbours were so much used to their regular shout that it's become a background music for their evenings
"You are always late. You no longer have dinner with me, I don't get to see you anymore and every damn time you blame it on work. Are you the only one working Christian? Those men that are there for their family,don't they work? Why is your own different? "She kept going on and on while the man sat on the couch his hand on his head.
"You don't have to shout to make your point May. I'm right here and I can still hear you if you talked calmly" he tries to calm her down,but that only infuriated her more
"It's your mother that is shouting. You cheating, lying piece of shit. I regret the day I said yes to marrying you"
"Woman you forget you never got to say yes because you didn't give me the chance to propose! You tricked me into this hell of a marriage with a pregnancy that never existed! If you regret it so much then please leave! What are you still here for!?"
"Leave so you can bring in the woman you've been having an affair with? You want a happy ending?"she laughs maniacally "I won't give you that pleasure. You are stuck with me forever dear husband. Remember our vows? Till death do us part? I plan on keeping them till the day you die you SOB" She turns on her heels and storms out. He sits transfixed, staring at the door where she just left from.
"What the hell! Who is this person? What have I gotten myself into?" The man silently resolved to get a divorce. He has been married for a short 5years but they had been years of hell and he was not ready to spend a minute more in the agony he called marriage. He brought out his phone
"Hello, good evening bro. Will you be in your office tomorrow? Wonderful. I'll be stopping by. 10am,yes. Goodnight" he puts his phone back and leaves the house to a hotel where he spends more night than he does in his own house. Till death do us part was turning out to be a curse and he was not going to watch that curse take his life at such a young age. He had options and by God was he going to explore them.
