"Eyrie, is there anything you need to have come here?" Fei asked while organizing the consoles.
Eyrie nodded. She turned to Fei and opened her mouth to reply, but suddenly, she couldn't think of anything to say.
Why did she come here again?
For confirmation? For comfort? She couldn't remember.
Her gaze flitted across the room before landing on her brother's chubby face staring right back at her.
Eyrie looked away.
"Fei, you will protect this family forever, right? You'll never betray us, right?" Her voice was unsteady as she finally spoke.
The young woman realized that these were stupid questions to ask, but she couldn't help but do so. She had come to see Fei for both confirmation and comfort.
If the mutant replied positively to her questions, she decided that she would PROTECT HER, stand by her side, and fight for her.
But Fei didn't think that the questions were strange at all. She felt it was right for Eyrie to ask these questions to ensure she was doing her job correctly.
"Yes! I will protect this family forever, and never betray you!" The mutant beamed. And she meant it. Even to this day, she has always thought that her life belonged to her master, and without him, she wouldn't be able to live. So she will protect him no matter what.
As for the entire Rochester family, these people were her master's blood relatives. If any of them died, her master would undoubtedly become unhappy, right? So it was without question that they would all be under her protection as well.
The eldest miss of the Rochester household exhaled a breath that she didn't know she was holding. "Thank you… Thank you, Fei."
Before she knew it, she had tears rolling down her face – tears of joy and relief.
Eh?
Why am I crying? Stop! When Eyrie felt the wetness on her face, she immediately crouched down and hid her face in her hands.
She didn't want Fei and Carlos to see such an unsightly side of her. As the oldest person here, wasn't it shameful to weep?
But it was no use. The tears wouldn't stop.
The only thing she could do was cover her mouth to prevent any sobs from coming out.
"Eyrie! What's wrong? Are you in pain?"
Fei was in an extreme panic as her eyes skirted around, trying to think of something that would make her friend feel better. She felt upset at herself. It was only after her words did Eyrie start to cry. The mutant knew that she wasn't too good with words, so she thought that she had said something to offend Eyrie.
Carlos wasn't really sure how to react. He didn't understand why Eyrie asked the questions she did, nor did he understand her reaction to Fei's answer.
Having someone vow to protect you, isn't that something to feel good about? Then why is his sister crying so much?
Wait… could these be the legendary 'tears of joy'?!
Yeah, probably not. On second thought, Carlos wasn't sure that his sister had the capability to show such complex emotions.
Then what was the reason? Did unbeknown to him, his sister have a medical condition that gave her spasms that occurred randomly?
Unlike the mutant who didn't know what to do, he hurriedly strode to one of the shelves that contained miscellaneous items and pulled out a box of tissues.
Seeing the object in her brother's hand from the corner of her eyes, Eyrie finally moved.
Pulling a few tissues out, she blew her nose and cleaned up her face. "Thanks, Carlito." She whispered.
Standing at the side, Fei thought that she ought to do something too. "Eyrie, I'm very sorry for anything that I may have done to make you cry."
Hearing these words, Eyrie widened her eyes. "No, no, no, no! It's not your fault, and I'm not sad either!"
"Then why'd you cry, sis?" Relieved now, Carlos pouted.
"I don't know." A sweet smile blossomed on the young woman's face.
In truth, she did know. She was probably so relieved at Fei's vows that she had begun crying. After all, previously, her stress due to this matter was so severe that doctors diagnosed her all sorts of other medicine for her mind to relax.
In the past, she also had terrifying nightmares that prevented her from sleeping, giving her insomnia. But in recent years, she hadn't had such nightmares ever since befriending Fei.
But all these depressing matters were unknown to her younger brother.
"You don't know?! That's really dangerous, Sis! You should go to the doctor- no-, LET'S GO TO THE DOCTOR NOW! This is NOT a time to smile!" Carlos pulled on his sister's sleeve. All of the relief was gone from his now dark face.
Eyrie laughed. "No, it's fine, Carlos. I'll just stay here and accompany you guys. With this, any underlying problems will disappear!"
"Lies! What do you take me for?" Carlos punched her arm in fury. He wasn't strong enough, so he couldn't forcibly take his sister to the doctor.
On the side, when Fei saw her friend's relaxed smile that seemed to light up her entire figure, she was suddenly reminded of a time five years ago, when she had agreed to be friends with her.
The corners of her lips curved up. It was a nice scene to see.
…
But good times never last.
It was as if the deities above were playing with fate like a fiddle, leading everyone around by the nose yet not giving them anything substantial.
That night, Eyrie had a dream.
Oh no! What dream did Eyrie have?
