Bab 50: Realizations
Is this how a normal person would answer?
Oh, wait, Fei is a mutant, not a normal human. Eyrie pinched the place in between her eyebrows while sighing. "But Fei, how do you feel about the food?"
"What do you mean? The food is fine."
"Yeah? Then which is your favorite dish?"
Fei fell deep in thought, before finally answering with a straight face. "My master's favorite dish will be my favorite dish as well."
"You…" Eyrie shook her head. "But I'm not asking Carlos, I'm asking about YOUR favorite dish."
She didn't ask this in a kind manner that she acted like she was doing. Eyrie had stepped up in her plan to further humanize Fei.
Just as Fei had specific books that she enjoyed reading more than others, Eyrie thought that she must have a favorite food as well. Acknowledging that food should make Fei more aware of her feelings.
Fei blinked. She didn't know how to reply to the question as she glanced at the platefuls of different delicacies that surrounded her. In truth, she had never thought about how the food tasted as she was eating it.
She always thought of eating like accomplishing a mission and would never try to intentionally savor or yearn for a certain type of food.
Seeing her discomfort, Carlos quipped in. "Sis Eyrie… it's fine isn't it? Fei doesn't have to answer. It's fine that she likes whatever I like. I like a lot of foods, more than you can ever imagine, so it's not like I'll be forcing Fei against her will to eat what I like."
Eyrie looked at her little brother's slight panic and her little sister's sharp glare; she once again sighed. "Fine. But Fei, you can always tell us your worries, your feelings, okay?"
Hearing her words, Carol didn't say anything, but her expression subtly darkened.
"Yes, yes!" On the other hand, Carlos was quick to agree.
Looking at the respective members of the Rochester family, Fei couldn't help but have a warm feeling bubble floating up in her heart. They are such nice people, she thought. At these times, she should say 'thank you,' right?
Resolving herself, Fei smiled a stunning smile, one that enriched the colors in her surroundings. "Thank you."
Carlos bowed his head as his chubby cheeks flared up with red flames. "N-Not at all," he stammered. He felt that whenever his bodyguard smiled, she had beauty comparable to his late mother.
Although she had passed away before Carlos could even register his own thoughts, he had seen plenty of fabulous paintings of her, adulating her beauty.
Eyrie did not react like her little brother and merely widened her eyes and returned a smile of her own when seeing her friend's smile. Even in her past life, such an expression from Fei was rare. She glanced over to see her sister's reaction.
Carol was similarly quite stunned by the expression that the mutant made. However, she refused to be swayed by it.
How could she, a proud member of the Rochester family, be influenced by a mere servant?
Impossible.
Her family is of noble lineage. She, as a lady from that lineage, should be upholding the pride of it.
As she looked at her siblings, who were visibly swayed by that one smile, she felt a sense of unprecedented disgust.
How could they be such simpletons? Even her prodigious elder sister…
Don't they understand? This is how they get lied to, cheated on, stepped on, taken advantage of… and the list goes on. You should be especially careful since you are respectable members of the great Rochester family.
Your actions will represent the nobility of the family to the outside world.
Understanding her younger sister's excessive worries, Eyrie nodded at her to show her consideration.
But that nod only further infuriated Carol.
At this time, Carlos also sensed that something was wrong. "Sis Carol. Don't look so sad. Smile!"
He pointed his index fingers on the corners of his lips and lifted them up, creating a strange smile. "It's a holiday, a happy day."
Seeing her little brother's tactics, Carol finally softened her eyebrows which were heavily furrowed previously.
"Alright," she said in an exasperated manner, but there was finally a trace of a smile on her lips.

Over the course of the next few weeks, the four of them – Carol, Carlos, Eyrie, and Fei – frequently hung out together.
Sometimes, it was in the different lounge rooms, sometimes the game room, and sometimes outside.
However, Eyrie, the person that normally organized these meetings, couldn't stand gathering outside anymore. As the weather began to grow colder and eventually became capable of freezing puddles, the less often the four met outside.
Well, no one really complained, though it was agreed upon that they would meet outside on the day of the first snow, which somehow, the weather forecast predicted it to be after Christmas.
Hearing the news, Eyrie almost collapsed from fear. It was a well-known fact that November and December would be cold but not the coldest times of the year. It was the months January and February that were truly cold enough to freeze people.
Perhaps the only person that could perfectly endure the cold would be Fei since she had an enhanced body.
Over the few gatherings, Fei had learned plenty from the three siblings, things that did not exist in the library.
One of heaviest things she learned was that the knowledge from the library was outdated by eight years. Eyrie had secretly told her that after the late madam of the family died, her father hadn't bothered to update it since his wife was the only person that used the library anyway.
This meant that a lot of information that Fei read about was unreliable and useless!
Nowadays, the technology was so well developed that there was no need for physical books and the like.
It was only because the household had been so used to the madam's antiquated way of doing thing that they kept the library filled with physical books, taught Carlos to write/ do work on paper, printed each file that was used and archived it… etc.
In addition to this interesting yet heavy discovery, there were two other things that Fei learned.
