Bab 79: Chapter 79 - Jennifer

It was her 20th birthday. As of today, her girlhood has completely passed. It happened to be a weekend and she walked alone on the street feeling like a stray cat.

Wandering along Broadway in the morning, she passed a small theater and saw the advertisement at the door. Students from a small non-professional drama school in New York were performing La Traviata.

So she went in and watched a show. It was performed well and she sneakily shed a few tears.

It was noon by the time the play ended. She bought a piece of chocolate cream cheesecake, sat at an empty bench in Central Park, and ate a bite.

She finally succeeded in slimming down, by basically isolating herself from all these high-calorie foods. But it was her birthday today, and she felt like indulging herself!

After eating the cake, she tossed the box into the trash can next to her seat, and carefully inspected her trenchcoat for food crumbs. She took out a paper towel and wiped her hands, before picking up her bag, and continued to wander.

Passing through Hell's Kitchen, she turned into the Flatiron District and looked up at the Empire State Building from afar. She started to turn back and unknowingly walked onto Fifth Avenue.

She visited several luxury shops with her chin up and browsed many items for a long time. Although she didn't buy anything, the staff had noticed her Chanel trenchcoat and very enthusiastically welcomed her to come again.

She didn't plan on going back. Everything was so expensive!

The Chanel trenchcoat was given to her by Eric the last time he visited, before their very beautiful street shot. She later learned from that article that this trenchcoat was very expensive, and was worth several times her paycheck. If she had known the price in advance, she would never have accepted it.

After wandering around some more, she was persuaded by a very eloquent female clerk to buy a bottle of Dior perfume. She couldn't help but spend more than two thousand dollars on it when she remembered that he seemed to like the smell.

Well, she once again couldn't help but think of that... bastard.

After all, it was her 20th birthday. Her parents and several good friends either called or mailed her birthday gifts. That Matthew Perry guy even sent her an expensive diamond bracelet and sincerely wished her on the phone. But Eric didn't remember, he didn't even call to wish her a happy birthday, while here she was pining and struggling with her personal feelings.

He hadn't even called in four and a half days.

For her past birthdays, even if she was not accompanied by her parents, she would call a few friends to gather for a meal and open the gifts from her circle of friends.

It was a pity that she couldn't make any new friends on the crew. Working Girl is a female career romance comedy loosely based on the movie of the same name that released last year, with a total of four heroines. According to the number of plays, she was regarded as the female number two.

When she first joined the group, the other three female protagonists were very enthusiastic about her. They went to explore the streets, watch dramas, and eat together. After spending a few days getting close to her, they started trying to subtlely persuade her to introduce her boyfriend to them. She finally understood their motives, otherwise, how could an outsider be so popular from the beginning?

At that time, she had just broken up with Eric, and the guy did not yet fly to New York to apologize to her. So she told them the truth, and then there were no more friends for her in the crew.

Several girls in the crew wanted to make a name for themselves with this new series that NBC was producing. They were even willing to do things like robbing, intriguing, bribing screenwriters, going to bed with the producers, etc. Anyway, she heard from the crew that some of them were even doing dirty things for more screentime.

Among all the girls in the crew, she was the most beautiful, even more than the first heroine. Therefore, it was inevitable that she'd be harassed. One of the art directors even bluntly hinted that he could add some drama and screentime to her role, as long as she accompanied him to a meal at night. She refused decisively.

This continued until one day, the new handsome actor Brad Pitt was suddenly kicked out of the crew. In this circle, any and all news spread quickly. Thus, no one dared to harass her after that. Even the producers of the TV series started being very polite to her, claiming that she had found a good boyfriend.

After that, she was even more isolated in the crew. Several of the actresses privately called her a scheming bitch, and that she lied about breaking up with Eric, and deliberately hid her relationship. She was too lazy to care and did not bother defending herself to that group of jealous bitches.

She didn't know if she would be accepted in this role by the audience. Anyway, even though the movie was a great hit and was highly-rated, they had very low expectations on the TV series and were just going to shoot season 1 of the series containing 12 episodes. Upon airing, if the average number of viewers per episode is less than 6 million, then it will be cut off after this season. She didn't think the fame she gained from the series would be great enough to surpass the fame she gained as Eric's girlfriend.

There would always be scattered news about her in the tabloids. They always called her Eric Williams's current girlfriend, ex-girlfriend, gossip girlfriend, and the like. She had flicked through a few such articles once, and then dared not read those newspapers anymore. Anyway, they would never call her the heroine of Working Woman and all of it could so easily be stopped if Eric opens his mouth, but the hateful guy never did anything about it.

Without her notice, night had fallen and she still didn't want to go back home. She would have to once again make dinner by herself, watch TV by herself, do the laundry by herself, watch the street out of her window by herself and sleep by herself...

On her 20th birthday, which was supposed to be a special day, even though surrounded by a crowd she suddenly discovered that she felt lonely and wanted to be alone. At the gate of a movie theater across the street, she observed that there was a long line of people and walked closer curiously. The poster of Pretty Woman was hung high on the gate. The two leading actors were smiling together and stood back to back. The tall girl looked really sexy and she hated her for it. She probably only got the role by sleeping with that bastard.

The familiar shutter sound had her turning around and observed a paparazzi turning away calmly as if nothing had happened. Obviously, she just got photographed with a pouting expression while frowning at the poster. She considered leaving immediately.

What might they write this time? Probably something like, "Ex-girlfriend scoffs at Eric Williams's new work."

Damn it, unconsciously, she still got in the queue to buy a ticket. I'm even going to watch your movie you bastard, see how much I miss you.

A few minutes later, she walked into the theater with a movie ticket.

For two full hours, she couldn't help but place herself in the position of the heroine, thinking about how the effect would be if she performed the role herself.

The plot continued. Woah, there was even a sex scene, though the camera was blocked away, and she subconsciously covered her bulging chest in the dark.

If she were to play the role, with that guy's possessive character, she knew that he would definitely delete this scene. Well, that's good, it seems that he didn't particularly care about Julia Roberts.

Thinking this way, she finally relaxed and felt as if she successfully grabbed a role in a play, or won a game of chess, or won the first place in the chicken wings eating competition when she was a child.

Anyway, she felt like that. When she saw that the heroine got her fairy tale, she wondered, "What about my fairy tale?"

She walked out of the cinema with a feeling of emptiness in her heart.

It was past nine o'clock and she couldn't go shopping anymore. She reminded herself more than once that she shouldn't wander alone at night. She had always been very obedient to this rule.

After a whole day of walking, she didn't feel too tired. But after sitting in the cinema for two hours, her calves began to sore, and she didn't want to walk anymore, so she beckoned a taxi.

...

Climbing the stairs with difficulty, she finally reached the door of her apartment.

There was light coming from under her door, and inexplicably she felt like she knew who was inside and was looking forward to finding if she were right.

With a trembling hand, she took out the key and opened the door, and finally saw the busy figure in the living room.

All the energy escaped from her body in an instant and she felt very tired.

Whoever said that women were born to be able to go shopping was obviously spouting nonsense.

Leaning tiredly against the wall of the porch, she continued gazing at the figure with a faint smile.

The busy man looked up and a smile appeared on his handsome face upon seeing her.

"Jane, I'm so sorry for being late. I was up till two in the morning waiting for the box office data and forgot to buy a plane ticket. I borrowed Mr. Diller's private plane and it was already past three o'clock in the afternoon when I arrived. You were not home, so I had to arrange it all by myself. I'm not familiar with New York, and I almost got lost when I was out buying things, so I might not have prepared enough."

She listened to his chatter and felt warm in her heart. Eric carefully struck the match and lit the candles on the cake one by one, and then said: "Happy birthday!"

Tossing away her handbag, she still leaned against the wall. Raising her hands weakly, making a carry me gesture to him, in a complaining tone of voice: "Eric, my legs hurt..."

Hey everyone!

That's the end of my edited chapters. As the lockdown has been relieved at my place, I need to start looking for a new job and I'm unable to spare as much time as I would like on this work anymore.

Expect the frequency of updates to drop. But I will try my best to keep the updates regular.
