Bab 14: Picking Sides
In the morning, Tang Qingyu came out of the room and saw Lin making breakfast for herself.
Now that Lu Shen wasn't there, he felt as if he was going to be able to talk to his sister comfortably, since there wasn't a reason for them to get mad at each other.
"You're up. Want eggs?"
"Sure. Are you coming to visit Mother and Father with me?" Tang Qingyu asked.
"Yeah. Umm... do you mind if Shen comes with us or do you just want it to be family time?" Lin asked nervously.
"Lin, I know you let going to be even more mad at me if I said he can't come, so I'll let him come with us. Also, I just wanted to let you know that I'm objecting to your relationship because of a good reason. I'm doing it to save you from a heartbreak or cheating incident in the future."
"How do you even know he's going to cheat on me?! You act as if you know him, but you haven't seen him in years! Don't tell me that from seeing him when he was little, you think he's the type to cheat. If 80 percent of all men cheat and break womens' hearts, then I am sure that Shen is one of the 20 percent that are faithful. Are you just assuming that he will cheat because you have done it before?" Lin was not going to lose Shen just because her brother said no.
"Lin! You're going too far! I've known you since you were born, but you can't even trust me on one thing and you want to take the side of someone who isn't family!" He was getting frustrated with Lin. He thought 'Why did she have to choose him?'
Lin said, "You guys aren't always going to be there for me when I'm having troubles. And it's because you guys are my family that I don't want to trouble you and make you think that I'm a burden. If I marry Shen, then he will be there all the time for me and give me care, protection, and attention. I wouldn't need to bother you with anything. Also, I'm going to start a new family and the first person that I will need to do that is a husband, so I chose Shen."
He sighed and shook his head, "If you see any signs that he's cheating, you better dump him immediately. Understand?"
"Okay! Okay! If I see that he is unfaithful, then I will leave him. Didn't you say you'll drop this matter until later? Eat your eggs!" Lin tried to change the subject.
"Fine," he dropped it and ate his breakfast with Lin.
Once they finished, the siblings got ready and walked to the car. Shen arrived at the house and followed them into his future brother-in-law's car.
The whole car ride was silent and they arrived at Tang Wei and Zhang Yi's residence.
The parents came out to greet them and they all entered the mansion.
"Qingyu, you should have told us you were coming beforehand! We would've prepared a lot of good food for you!" Zhang Yi said as she hugged her son.
"I wanted to surprise you guys. It's nice to be back home. A lot of things have... changed," he said as he looked at his sister and Shen holding hands. Shen's hand became stiff when Qingyu glared at him. Lin noticed her brother's hostility towards Shen, so she patted her fiancée's hand to assure him that his objection wouldn't affect their relationship.
Tang Wei noticed the silence, so he said, "Son, let me show you what's been going on in the company lately. It'll give you more experience, so you'll be able to think of ways to improve your own company."
Tang Qingyu nodded and followed his father into his study.
The couple sat on the couch as they watched the two leave.
"Lin, do you think we did the right thing, getting engaged?" Shen suddenly asked.
Lin knew that he was going to feel insecure about this matter, especially when her brother decided to go against their engagement.
"Darling, don't mind him. He's just being absurd. I don't know what's gotten into him, but there is no way that I'm going to break off our engagement just because he doesn't want us together," she comforted him.
Zhang Yi heard them whispering and said, "Who doesn't want you guys together?! I'll deal them myself! You guys are a perfect match and whoever doesn't agree is a fool! It's hard to get a son-in-law like Shen and I'm not letting him go!" She sat next to Shen on the couch.
Shen was glad that someone supported them. He felt less insecure.
"It's your son. He thinks Shen will cheat on me and leave me," Lin said as she looked at her mother.
"Qingyu? Why would he think that? Anyways, I'll deal with it and make sure that he agrees to this engagement. Don't worry, Shen. I won't let you guys be burdened by him," Zhang Yi said confidently.
Tang Lin felt relieved, however, Lu Shen still felt uncomfortable about this.
"Actually, Aunty, I'm uncomfortable about this. I don't want to force Lin's brother to accept me. I want to convince him that I will be a great husband and life partner for Lin. I want to prove to him that I can give his sister a great life and I can protect her, so please, don't mention it to him." Shen said politely to Lin's mother.
Zhang Yi smiled at him as she patted his hand and said, "I'm so glad my daughter chose you. I now feel assured that you will be a good husband for my daughter. I won't feel worried in the future. And don't worry, I won't mention it to him. However, if he goes overboard and gives you guys a hard time, don't hesitate to tell me. I'll handle it."
They nodded and Zhang Yi said to Shen, "Also, Shen, call me mother. It feels a little distant when you call me Aunty. After all, you will get married to my daughter in the future, so it is fine if you call me that."
"Okay. Thank you for everything, Mother. I promise that I will never leave Lin," he said.
"Okay," she said as she hugged Shen.
Meanwhile, in Tang Wei's study, Qingyu was looking at the company's recent business deals.
"Father, what do you think about Lin's engagement? Don't you think it was too hasty?"
Tang Wei looked confused, "I agree with you that it was hasty, but I believe that Shen is a good man and that he will love and take good care of Lin."
"What if I told you that there was a chance that he would cheat or leave Lin in the future?" Tang Qingyu was trying to convince his father to be on his side.
"Why do you think that?"
"Think about it. Lu Shen is a wealthy man that could get any women that he wants. However, he chooses to marry Lin, a woman who is serious and unromantic. Don't you think it's a little weird that he would marry her? What if he's just getting our trust and marrying her for our family's support? What if he cheats on her and leaves her once he get what he wants? The only family in the capital that could match the Lu family is our family. If they don't have our support, then we would probably become more powerful than them and oppress them. If they get married, then they would be able to keep us under their control."
Tang Wei was starting to believe his son and he told himself that he should be wary of Shen.
"Alright, I want you to keep watch on Shen. If there's anything that shows that he will betray my daughter, then you must inform me about it immediately! I will cut off ties to the Lu family and make them suffer in their bankruptcy if he does," Lin's father said as he got up from his chair.
"Yes, Father."
