How long had it been since he had seen his litter-brother? Too long in fact! "Kiba?!" he called. His brother's eyes flashed with happiness. "Akela! It is you! Hello my brother!" They ran towards each other, licking each other's muzzles. "What are you doing here Kiba? I thought you left Dad's pack." Kiba's smile vanished at once, he sighed and lowered his tail. "Indeed I did...but being on my own made me think twice…" he looked into his brother's eyes. They were large and sad.
"Akela...I'm sorry for how I treated you and Blue when we were together. I guess that I was just jealous. Every time I thought about you, my heart sank. I wished I hadn't left. I owe you and Blue a huge apology." He cocked his head. "But what are you doing all the way out here? Did you leave too?" Akela looked out across the land for a long moment. Then, looking back at his brother, he said sadly, "Mom and Dad told me to leave. War was breaking out between the pack and a rival one. They wanted to protect me...Blue came with me, as well. I haven't been back there since…"
Kiba lowered his ears. He nuzzled his brother. "I'm sorry Akela…oh how I wish I was there...with you and Blue. But speaking of her, where is she?" Akela looked in the direction of his pregnant mate. "She's in the den, resting. The pups will be here soon enough." Kiba's eyes flashed with happiness. "She's pregnant?! Congratulations!" Akela chuckled. "I wouldn't yet until they're born."
Kiba smiled. Akela noticed some of his teeth were missing. Probably from fighting, or perhaps hunting. But he wasn't going to ask him about that yet. "Would you like to stay here in our territory? We could use another member." Kiba wagged his tail. "I thought you'd never ask!" Akela licked his muzzle, before turning back, Kiba at his side. When they got the den, Akela called Blue. "Blue love...would you be able to come out here please?" It was quiet. "Why?" she finally called. Akela looked at Kiba, who nodded. "There's someone here you'd like to see." Blue managed to squeeze her way through, and as she looked up, she almost fainted. "K-Kiba?"
Kiba wagged his tail. "Hey Blue…" Blue's own tail began to wag, but with her pregnancy taking its toll, she couldn't greet him like she wanted too. Kiba walked up to her and nuzzled her face. "How've you been?" Blue smiled. "I've been better...and yourself?" Kiba sighed. "How I wish I was the same. Blue I'm sorry I treated you like garbage all those months ago, when I was alone, I wished I could take back those things I said to you. Can you forgive me?"
Blue licked his muzzle. "Don't worry about it Kiba...we all make mistakes. Besides, it'll be nice to have you around. We've missed you." He smiled and licked her muzzle. "And I've missed you. Both of you." Blue smiled and went back into the den to rest. Akela sat on his haunches and scratched his ear. Kiba looked at him. "How long have you ad Blue had this territory? Don't get me wrong it's nice. But it's a little…small." Akela stood and shook himself. "We've had it for a few months now, the neighboring packs are keeping us low key, because it's just us.
The pack north of here, the south tundra has been pretty friendly. Their alpha said as long as we're not a threat, we can hunt in his territory if we needed to. With the pups on the way, we'll slowly get bigger." He looked at Akela. "By the way, have you run into any dispersal's while you were away?" "Oh, well…" Kiba pawed the ground. "I did run into one female. Her name was Dawn, she was so nice and kind. She reminded me of you in a way. We stayed together for some time, but a pack of dire-wolves were after her, and she had to leave to protect me…"
Akela studied his brother's face. "You loved her...didn't you?" Kiba sighed. "You could say that, but...there's nothing I can do about it now. It was her choice." Akela nuzzled his brother. "I'm sure she's okay. Maybe you'll see her again." Kiba chuckled. "Yeah...maybe." Four days had passed, Blue had gone into labor, and as the day turned into dusk Akela was getting more worried than he should've been. Blue told him to wait outside, because she didn't want him to get in the way. Akela paced back and forth in front of the den, eagerly waiting to see if his mate was okay. Kiba was laying down, washing the dirt from his claws. "She'll be fine Akela...she's strong. You and I both know that." Akela stopped and looked at him.
"I know that...but what if something happens? I just don't want anything bad to happen to her...or the pups." Kiba nibbled at his claws, spitting the dirt from between his teeth. "Well...just stay strong. You'll get through this." As the sun was just going to disappear, the sound of little whimpers and whines filled Akela's ears. Kiba got to his feet, and walked up to him. "You hear that?" Akela smiled. "I do. It's the most amazing sound I have ever heard." "Akela love?" Blue called. "Blue? Are you okay?" "I'm fine, I'm just tired. Come see them before I nod out." Akela looked at Kiba. Kiba nodded his head towards the den. "Go on…" he urged gently.
Akela squeezed his way through. Four healthy pups lay next to Blue's stomach. The first one was mixed with her fur color and Akela's. The next two were identical twins, they both had black and dark blue fur. And the last pup...Akela looked closely. The pup had black fur with a white underbelly. It had a white tipped tail and white paws. Akela smiled. "That one looks just like me…" Blue smiled. "That...would be your daughter. The other three are your sons."
He nuzzled her face. "They're perfect. Have you decided on the right names?" Blue looked at her pups. "The first one I was thinking "Storm." The twins will be "Shasta" and "Koda." And the little girl…" she paused and looked up at him. "Why don't you name her?" Akela looked at his daughter, she sneezed and whined. He smiled. "How about "Winter?" It fits her." Blue licked the pups gently, they squirmed and whined as they huddled closer together. "I like that name. Winter it is."
Blue yawned and rested her head between her paws. Akela licked her head, then went out to talk to Kiba. "How is she?" he asks. Akela allowed his tongue to loll. "She's fine. The pups are strong and healthy." Kiba's ears twitch to the sound of the pups. He chuckled. "Congratulations...how many did she have?" "Three males and one female." Kiba sat down and scratched his ear. He shook his head and let out a loud yawn. Akela had noticed his missing teeth once more, and decided it was time to say something about them. "Kiba...if you don't mind me asking...how did you lose your teeth?" Kiba sighed and looked out across the trees. His tail thumped behind him. He didn't want to talk about it, but he knew his brother would understand.
He looked back at him and replied. "From many fights with strange wolves. Most of them I'm lucky I didn't get my throat ripped out. This one fight I had was with a male a bit bigger than myself. I was eating from a carcass, minding my own business. He told me to scram and said that it was his, even though it smelled and tasted like it had been sitting there for days. When he wouldn't take no for an answer, he attacked me.
I chased him away, but I was hurt pretty badly. He didn't leave me any scars, but my teeth were a different story. I could taste my own blood in my mouth, and my teeth were...well gone." Akela sat there at a loss for words. "Well...I'm just glad you're okay, and that you're safe." Kiba smiled. "I always am. You know that…"
