The attack operation was a complete disaster, the enemy noticed them early and easily destroyed their plan, the HQ contact was never reestablished and now the dispersed troops were being hunted while completely blind.
Alyssa ran through the forest, unable to think where she was heading or making up any plans. The Oni behind her didn't give her a single break, chasing right behind her like a hunting dog chased a wild rabbit.
The Oni was faster due to his larger legs, it was just a matter of time for him to catch her. Alyssa wanted to lose him but up until now had no success. She knew she wouldn't stand a chance if she decided to fight him. Her specialty was research, not acting like a brute, and while she was pretty smart, all her knowledge was focused on science and pretty much nothing else...well, aside from tentacles, but we can skip that right?
The other soldiers who were escorting her had separated from her after that arrows volley. A few were hurt by the arrows, some stayed behind to stop the enemy while others....only god knows what the hell they were doing now...
"Is this the end?"
As she felt the wind generated by the hammer swing that missed her back by less than a centimeter she knew her time had run out.
"Gah!"
And maybe exactly because of her desperate situation she didn't see the roots in her feet, making her dive into the ground.
Seeing his prey fall to the ground, the Oni engineer easily caught up again, and prepared for one deadly vertical swing.
"Finally! Now you can't escape anymore! Die!"
And as he swing the hammer downward, Alyssa moved by reflex, using her arms to protect her from the swing.
Bang!
The impact was quite strong, the hammer hit Alyssa's both arms, breaking their bones and sinking her body into the earth.
"Huh!?"
Looking at the odd hole where the body of the green girl had disappeared, the Oni didn't know what to do.
(Is this a rabbit hole? No, that was a bit too big for a rabbit, and there were no rabbits over here, only boars... Maybe the boars started making nests in the ground as well? Hell, it could actually be possible, those giant things lay eggs, so I don't see why they couldn't dig holes as well but there were no traces of them over here... So, what is this hole!???)
The Oni stood there stunned, not knowing what to do, when a single call from his master solved all doubts he had in his mind.
"What are you doing, stupid? Have you gotten hurt?"
"Eh? Master!? No, I..."
"I see in my map that your target is gone, so, what are you waiting for, stupid? Come back to the camp!"
"Y-yes Master! I will go right away!"
The Oni took another glance at the hole before turning around and starting to walk back.
--//--
In the Alliance's Camp, Negi was looking at her mini-map along side Jaylee, the battle in the fortress had just started but the situation didn't look too good.
At first the battle had gone as predicted, many of the enemy troops were taken out before they could reach the fort and if things proceeded like that, they would be able to obtain victory even without the aid of the attack team, but, at the moment they reached the walls, all plans went down the drain. The wall was easily breached and if not for the effort of Apollo's soldiers' quickly response, the fortress would have been taken then and there.
After this the battle proceeded slowly, with only a few Oni taken out, while most of the hurt ones being able to retreat in time to treat their wounds. If the attack team did well, this was fine. As long as the attack team broke the enemy's bracelet, victory would be achieved, no matter how many they were.
Because Negi's units had been buried by the falling wall, it was impossible for them to see anything in first person, so all they could observe was the points moving about in the map.
Suddenly the Oni who had been left behind arrived at the frontlines and the battle field changed. The attackers retreated and let one single unit advance instead, and, on the other side, Apollo's forces did the same.
"What the hell? Did they start a duel!?"
The two units shook again and again but didn't move anywhere, neither stepping forward or backward, but this wasn't the case for the Oni troops. Negi was not sure if Apollo had noticed or not but while they were fighting that duel, a group of Oni sneaked around and circled the fortress to the other side before stopping in place.
Seeing this, Jaylee clicked his tongue and shook his head.
"It seems like they didn't notice. This battle is finished. Any news about the attack team?"
"No, I still have no contact with them."
"Have you checked the barrack slots? See if they are empty."
"Great idea! Let's see..."
As Negi operated her bracer to find out this information, she suddenly turned pale upon discovering the results.
"They-"
Jaylee didn't wait her to finish and made a hand sign in the air, suddenly Grace and Tabita appeared behind Negi's maids, striking them in the neck.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?"
"Since you failed, I don't need you anymore."
"WHAT!? YOU-!!!"
As Tabita appeared behind Negi, knocking her out, another person was teleported at the scene.
"What!? Grace!!"
Surprised, Jaylee commanded Grace to attack the new intruder, but her attack was repelled by an invisible barrier.
"Calm down! I'm an official. I'm here just to take the girl. Since she lost her conscience in your hands, she can be considered out of the game. Please hand her over to me."
Jaylee stopped to think for a second but nodded in the end.
"...Tabita."
"Yes, Master."
He didn't even need to say his commands as the maid was able to read his mind. Taking one step toward the intruder, she pushed Negi's unconscious body to him and stepped back.
"Thank you. Have a nice game."
A light flashed and Negi and the man were teleported back to the ship orbiting the Planet, leaving only Jaylee and his maids behind.
"All right, you know what to do. Take over the camp."
"Yes, Master!"
