Hex hadn't lived long with Wraith, just a few months, but he loved his place. Wraith lived down a small cobbled arcade of bookshops and printers. His front door simply read: W. Macabre.
Yet inside it led down into a cellar that was the size of warehouse. There was even a road that leads out into the traffic two blocks away.
Wraith would joke to Hex that it was his bat cave.
There was everything down there from endless Magic potions to Ancient weapons from Japan to Brooklyn. A library filled with thousands of rare and forgotten books. Amulets by the box full. Even a fully working science lab. The whole place was an Aladdin's cave of mystery and 21st technology.
He might have been the son of mother earth and his duty was always to protect her. But his main stock and trade was taking on monsters and strange events for money. He was in truth an occult detective and he was connected to a whole group of them throughout London.
They would pass jobs back and forth to each other like bank robbers. A twilight group that if people found out they existed, it would bring down the whole garbage pile of government.
Tonight, though, was a slow night. Wraith had gone to bed early while Hex lay on a comfy leather chair listening to the police channel. He felt warm and safe as he listened to the chatter.
"Shoplifter reported in Camden Market... Flasher at shooters Hill... Taxi driver crashed into lamppost... Fire at Murphy's fish and chip shop...
"Ah Jesus god no aaaarrrggghhh...!"
Hex almost jumped out of the chair as he heard the scream.
"It's a goddamn werewolf!" The voice sounded like it was about to scream again.
"Please repeat officer..." The controller sounded like she might join him in the scream too.
"I said it's a bloody werewolf and it's heading into Rainham Marshes nature reserve."
"Impossible." Wraith said as he walked up to the police radio. The scream must have woken him up.
"How so boss?" Asked Hex.
"Easy. There's no full moon tonight. Come on." He replied with a wink. "Let's find out why." Hex jumped off the chair. "You really can't help yourself, can you boss?"
Wraith gave a heartfelt laugh. "You sound like my mother. Come on, the game's afoot."
Thank you for reading Wraith Macabre. There will be a chapter every Tuesday and Friday, with more spooky adventures of the occult detective as he tries to solve weird and wonderful cases!!
