Eo stared at his own hand. There were five wisps slowly emanating off into the air, dissolving into nothingness.
He hadn't done any fighting or anything so he was able to do this for a while. That was why he had done this for 14 hours a day, for the best seven days. Reya had left by the third day, bored and itching to fight others in the arena. Eo had just continued grinding on with will and what could be called fanaticism.
But he had done it.
Eo's mentality over the past week was constantly shifting in order to make himself able to visualize new and crazy representations of essence. He thought he had gone partially crazy, as he was sure he was hallucinating. But he wasn't.
Eo quickly memorized his current mindset of the essence. Then, he released it.
Five sub-essences, he called it. He had figured it out first. By using the insane idea of sheer belief in his own thoughts he had managed to separate the essence once his thoughts were actually in step with the underlying universal truth. No one had done it this way, and it wasn't even real science. As crazy as it sounded, it was more accurate to say Eo either had a vivid imagination or was just really good at giving himself hallucinations.
There were two major branches in essence. The tangiform and the elemental essence. The tangiform was the vessel that could push the essence around, and interact with it. It had a logical connection with the body, obeying its mental orders. It was how Eo had circulated essence inside his own body to speed up his regeneration. By extruding out of his body, it was also how Eo had managed to control the dagger-chains: because the metal was a physical manifestation of his essence, it could be interacted with.
The other branch was Elemental Essence. It was what most other people just referred to as "octessence", because they didn't know tangiform existed. This elemental essence was the fluid that others saw when people generated giant stalagmites or synthesized metal.
Each of these branches had two unique components inside them, as well as sharing one component. These together made the five components that Eo had named "sub-essence".
One of the unique substances inside tangiform was a fluid that communicated with the mind, and obeyed thoughts. It was what was responsible for the mental communication between the brain and the rest of the tangiform. It was almost like a giant nerve, but in fluid form. Eo named this "Interment", as it was like an internal mentality, and constituted about 5% of the tangiform in mass.
The other unique substance inside tangiform was the main fluid that actually interacted with the essence. It was the substance that also listened to interment. Essentially, it was the bridge between the interment and the essence. Because it had the property of being able to physically drag around (elemental) essence, Eo named this "Interphy". It constituted about 94% of tangiform in mass. It was the thing that was most responsible for tangiform's properties.
The first unique component in the Elemental Essence was a very watery, almost ethereal-like substance that was very clear. It would get consumed when the user wanted to synthesize something. This was because it would actually convert the fluid into mass or energy. Because of its physical properties and its universalness, Eo christened this component as the "Essence River". This constituted about 60% of the Elemental Essence by mass. It was also what was responsible for the healing factor of essence circulation. Eo guessed it got consumed whenever it touched a damaged internal body part, healing it in the process.
The second unique component in the Elemental Essence was a wispy-like substance that was suspended in the Essence River. This was affected by emotion, and changed colors or intensity based off of the user's feelings. It also had a certain base hue, which determined the user's affinity. Because of a lack of more creative names, Eo just named this one the "Emoticurrent". This constituted about 10% of the Elemental Essence by mass.
The component Eo found in both branches was a large number of small orbs. They were small and bright, and supplied both the tangiform and the Elemental Essence with energy. Eo named these Globules. There were much, much more of these in the Elemental Essence than the tangiform. The globules constituted about 30% of the Elemental Essence by mass, but only about 1% of the tangiform by mass. This was expected, as the ability to synthesize metal definitely took more energy than the ability to swing them around with tangiform.
Eo saw parallelisms even within these sub-essences he had discovered. The Interment was like the Emoticurrent, and the Interphy was like the Essence River. They both required globules function. In fact, the Emoticurrent would consume globules faster if the person was more angsty. Eo's earlier lament now made sense!
A part of him wondered how some other pressing questions weren't answered, such as "how did the essence identify its owner" or "why does essence generate in a person", but he was satisfied for now.
It felt as if Eo had been baptized in knowledge and insight.
Eo felt happier than he had been in a very, very long time.
He undoubtedly felt himself also grow much more powerful. Eo really, really, really hoped he was the first one to figure this out, because absolutely no one told him or anyone about this.
