I dialed Jiang Yanran's number, my childhood friend and confidante. We had been inseparable, but after my parents' tragic death, my uncle and aunt had kept us apart. Yet, we remained close through secret phone calls and clandestine meetings. I had no one else to turn to in this desperate moment.
"Yanran, it's me, Ling. I need your help," I whispered urgently.
"What's wrong?" she asked, concern etched in her voice.
I briefed her on the sinister plot and the party where they planned to execute their scheme. Yanran's outrage was palpable. "Those people are monsters! We need to get you out of there, now!"
I pleaded with her to focus on a plan, and she instructed me to pack my bags and leave them near the window, which I had already done. She would arrange for Qin Yang to retrieve them and come to the party to extract me.
My doubts about the plan's feasibility were met with reassurance. "Trust me, Ling. I'll handle it. Just dress as they've asked, be yourself, and forget about this conversation. I'll take care of the rest."
Tears streamed down my face as I ended the call. I felt lost and alone, longing for my parents' protection. But I knew I had to be strong. I took a deep breath, wiped away my tears, and headed for a hot bath to calm my nerves before the party... and my escape.
