Bab 43: Servant
Waiting for Astonax to come out I hear his grumbling. "First these stupid birds of which we don't know how long it'll take before they'll be useful, and now what? What pet did he find now? If it's not something special I swear we'll eat it tonight.." Apparently he's not too happy with the Dodo's yet, but he'll grow to love them, I'm sure.
Just as Astonax sticks his head from the side of the door and sees the bright blue hair, and the small naked body of Fuxi he yells "Where did you find him!? Did you kidnap him!?" He runs up after grabbing a cloak that hangs next to the door and throws that cloak around Fuxi.
"Of course I didn't kidnap him... I found him passed out on the side of the creak in the forest. He woke up but lost his memory." Astonax looks me in my eyes to see if I'm telling the truth, he just nods and continues examining Fuxi.
"At first I thought it was some nobles son or something like that, the bright blue eyes and matching blue hair is something you'd see in a noble's family. But even though his skin is smudges slightly from walking through the forest his skin is too clean, even for a noble's son. Not even traces of the sun, or any calluses." He shakes his head. "I think he's some escaped experiment. There are hundreds of different researches being held to find a way to mass produce 'awakened' humans. Almost no kids can create a world, and natural treasures to awaken are hard to find, especially to match them up with those with the right affinity. This isn't important now, let's get him in, dressed, and fed. We'll talk about what we'll do with him."
And like that Astonax drags Fuxi off, I told him before we arrived that Astonax can be trusted and that he can just go with the flow. No need to ask my permission for things like going with him or accepting Astonax's food.
Sitting around the table with breakfast in front of us Fuxi speaks up for the first time. By now he's dressed up in simple clothing, brown pants and an almost white shirt. Things most people wear here. "Thanks uncle Astonax, I really appreciate the things you did for me, and you can cook really well." he smiles at Astonax "But master Gosamu saved my life, and I really thought about it, and I want to repay it by giving my life to him! I shall follow him and help him in any way I can, I will grow strong too to protect master Gosamu!"
Astonax looks at me with suspicion in his eyes. "Are you sure you just found him? Isn't this some weird power your world gives you? Charming anything, like those dodos you brought earlier, they haven't tried escaping once after you brought them, they don't act like wild animals at all." He stands up and walks to me with a finger pointing at me, before I can reply he continues. "I was fine with the dodos, dumb animals are one thing. But now a defenceless kid? Isn't that going a bit too far!"
By now his finger pokes in my chest, I slowly move his hand away as I start explaining "Astonax, I see what you mean, and because I trust you I will show I can do with my world. Like this you can see that this kid is truly not related to it." I stand up and walk outside. "Follow me, you too Fuxi."
When we get outside I continue explaining. "My world created a world not unlike this one, it's just empty of life. Nothing more than some grass and trees. But there's something more, the Tower. This tower is endlessly high and goes endlessly deep. At the centre of the Tower lies a small part of myself, this small part is the driving force of everything inside my world." on the floor I draw a tower with a flame in the middle.
"The sole task of the tower is to create new monsters I can summon, like this" I stand straight up again from the drawing and turn my back to Astonax. "Goba, I summon you here to come to my aid!" And in a flash of light Goba kneels before me.
"Master, you summoned me." Goba stays in his kneeling position. We discussed this before, we also discussed to show a limited amount of free will. We decided that it's best that when I summon one of my followers before others it's best that they act more like Astonax's summoned creature.
"As you see Goba is a goblin, he's the goblin that took me in but died. My world saved him. But my world made an exception on a rule here. To create life my world needs 3 things. Materials for the body, lile flesh and blood for most monsters. A soul that's collected by one of my summoned monsters, and that's refined by the tower. And a blueprint of a body, this is the trickiest part. I still don't know how to get them, and they can only be used once.
But the summoned monsters lose many things, it's no way to cheat death. Everything in the soul will be refined by the tower, except the very core. Not even the most basic instincts will survive the refining of the tower. The only exception is Goba, and even for him I don't know why, I think it's because I really needed his strength at the moment my world was created. Else I'd have died."
I look at Goba as I tell those things, but the last sentence saying I'd have died if Goba wasn't able to come to my rescue right away, I say it after turning around again. Looking straight into Astonax's eyes at the mentioning of death.
"I only have 3 more summoned monsters right now, but I can't summon in quick succession. I can summon them all later if you want to see them. But my world doesn't work with humans, I'm not sure why. Also those that live through my world don't show the free will wild live does, be it monster or humans. And thirdly, Fuxi might have lost his memories, but he doesn't show the lack of hard grained instincts any living being would have."
I put my hand on Astonax's shoulder. "This shows you that it's not like that right? And I'd understand if you need to give this information to your higher-ups but I'd really appreciate it if you didn't, I thought like this we can build our friendship on trust?"
Astonax nods at me. It's probably a lot to take in and he lost his words. I kinda like seeing him tongue-tied, he looks like he always knows what to say.
"Goba, could you help Astonax in weapon training? I'm probably not the best trainer myself." Goba stands up and his scythe appears in his hand. He turns to Astonax who seems mesmerised by the scythe and asks "When shall we start?"
Astonax shakes his head awake "N-not now! I w-will finish Gosamu's scythe today, then we can start tomorrow morning!" he looks really nervous under Goba's stare, the little fairy even appears and hovers above his head, ready to help in any way possible.
"Don't worry, Goba won't do anything unless you agree to be trained. He wouldn't do anything crazy. Oh right, I was wondering, you're still going to teach me etiquettes right? Could you teach Fuxi too, to look like a proper servant?"
This seems to distract Astonax from the threatening Goba as he calms down and thinks for a second "Hmm I don't know proper servant etiquettes, we never had them. But there's a nice guy in the street, he used to be a head butler, he knows everything about them. You can go ask him. Let me write him a letter."
And like that I make my first trip into town, followed by a simple dresses small boy and a Goblin in a fancy golden cloak. All on our way to Jeeves, the retired valet.
