Bab 17: Change of Target
With the coordination of Gerald as well as his commanders, the tactics started to bear fruit. Shortly after the tact was implemented, one of the demonic hybrids charged towards the formation. The lion hybrid was welcomed by the shield wall. As the formation is not invulnerable, some of the soldiers who met the lion hybrid with their shields were pushed away for a few feet.
The shield wall did help slow the charge of the beast, as this was actually the purpose of the shield wall. As the hybrid lost its momentum, the soldiers with the long ranged weapons were ordered to poke the demonic hybrids. Dozens of spears poked the demonic hybrids.
Some of the soldiers noticed that the belly was less covered with fur, thus they lunged towards this area. This actually paid off as the hybrid cried out standing on its back feet. As the demonic hybrid was screeching out, Gerald ordered all the archers to aim at its belly "Archers, aim at the belly of the beast as it is more vulnerable." A second later Gerald lowered his hand towards the beast and ordered "loose!"
With this command, dozens of projectiles flew towards the demonic hybrid. The lion was lost at what was happening and received the full blunt of the attack. This injured it to such a degree that the screeching became even louder. It was clear that the beast was giving out its last breaths. With this loud screech, the demonic lion fell on the ground, trying to struggle.
Taking advantage of this, the soldiers on the front strike down onto the beast making sure to finish the beast.
Noticing one of their own slain, the demonic hybrids dared not to rush forwards as before. Compared to the other demonic beasts, the demonic hybrids are more intelligent. This was also noticeable by the way they acted at this moment. The demonic hybrids were searching for something. At that point, it was not clear what they were searching for, so the other soldiers did not act rashly either.
A few moments later, it was clear what the demonic hybrids were actually searching for. This happened directly after Gerald gave another order. As Gerald ordered something to the soldiers, all the heads of the demonic hybrids turned towards Gerald. Taking a few steps back, all the demonic beasts leaped and tried to glide towards the position Gerald was. It was clear that the demonic hybrids clearly were aiming for chain of command, as it was the reason why they lost one of their own.
This change in the tactics of the demonic hybrids was surprising for Gerald, as he did not expect this level of intelligence from these beasts. At the time the formations were formed up, Gerald was still located closer to the archers. However after the demonic beasts leaped towards him, the whole formation got messed up. Gerald had to act fast, as the situation that was improving got back to worse in an instant.
Ordering the people around, "Men, turn around and change the formation. Archers rush back behind the soldiers with pole arms! Shielded soldiers, try to form a circle around us!" Gerald was not sure if this change in formation would help or be on time. The demonic hybrids were descending quickly towards him and Gerald had to act fast at that moment. The time was upon him, to clash with the demonic hybrids.
