Whenever I read this kind of plot in a novel, all I think is that the MC must be sick in the head, which sane person would accept this opportunity? Why is he acting as if he was doing them a favour and they rejected it? This is clearly a chance thing, this particular one is even worse, as a reasonable person would think that it's a loss without a miracle, and there are genuine disadvantages to them if it fails.
