I don't think the author wanted that connection, if so, the story would probably be in first person. If the story was in first person, the storyline would be too obvious and have less suspense. The author doesn't want you to understand the character deeply, I don't think the character is meant to be understood like that. Btw if you want a stronger connection with the character the author has another Novel called 'Free Fall (Pyramid of Gold)' it has more connection to the main character and has a more reliable narrator then this story (as you mentioned). It's about the length of a traditional novel and has a satisfying ending so don't worry about the length.
I'm excited to see what happens in the story next!
