I think if u want to move with oc characters and without diverting too much from orginal material aemma death is needed or else u have to add lot more your characters and change many plot settings, more than that important characters like aegon,aemond,deron,Helena will have to be replaced not only that character development of rhaenerya and viserys will take different turn if aemma did not die and very likely jace,Luke and Joffrey will also would not exist if they do exist their probably like legitimate heir .cause rhaenerya would not have a rival as long as there is no son for aemma and viserys would not push her to marry sea snake son to further deepened her claims to the succession to iron throne.

While both positions have their own advantage I want mc to take a different route, like a master of trade he can use his inventions (like compass , advance ships,new roads etc)and stuff .it help him gather allies both in and out of Westeros as well as political power. (money 🤑🤑 and influence in one go) he can use this to supress sea snake influence and this can also a oppertunity to create and expand his own naval fleet, of course for escort in land trading he can also gather small army of foot soliders, while it will be task because otto can get his influence in his business as well as other houses also try to get this to their advantage, so this will be the challenge of mc to get sovereignty of his own business.
