As a soldier, he'd gone through many battles and had lost many friends. All of this sacrifice wasn't without rewards as these hardships have helped him develop a keen instinct. A sort of sense that helped him survive in situations he really shouldn't have come out of and my words were triggering this instinct. It clawed at him from his core that my words spoke true.
